Anderson Silva fined $50,000 by UFC for skipping Los Angeles media tour

While it may not be everyone’s favorite thing to do, promoting a fight is, has and always will be the job of every fighter who happens to have any sort of following or media buzz.

If anyone’s got both it’s Anderson Silva, but at the same time, when you’re that good at a sport, where you can practically toy with half of the elite athletes that have the testicular fortitude to step in front of you, I’m sure I’d also grow tired of media obligations.

Silva, who happened to be in Los Angeles for the past couple of days was scheduled to partake/appear in a full day of media promotion and interviews. But instead the fighter apparently flew straight to Brazil.

According to a report by USA Today, Dana White punished the Middleweight champion by fining $50,000 US. White had the following to say regarding the situation:

“We had a full media day set up for him in Los Angeles, and he decided he didn’t want to do it, so he’s being fined $50,000.”

“He doesn’t like talking to the media, but it’s part of his contractual obligation. Everybody wants more money, more money, more money, but nobody wants to sell the fight or go out and talk to the media. Talking to the media is part of your job, whether you like it or not.”

Ultimately, the media is not going to change what the result is in the cage/ring, and if anything they’re simply acting as an uneseccary distraction for the fighter during the very intense and grueling training camp they have to endure.

I can’t necessarily blame a fighter for their lack of enthusiasm regarding media, because at the end of the day I’m sure I would also grow tired of mindlessly answering the same identical questions over and over again as well.

What do you think Lowkickers? Does the punishment fit the crime or is it too severe? And does this in any way make you believe that Anderon may be over-looking his opponent and or not taking him seriously?

  • Dana is right in what he said and the UFC were right to fine him too. However over the course of a fighters career just imagine how many interview he's done, plus it's not like he skipped a press conference which is really significant or like he does this all the time.

  • Once upon a time these guys would fight for $1,000 in unknown organizations.

Anderson Silva forfeiting $50,000 is a slap in the face to anyone in Brazil struggling to make a living if what he has allegedly done is true.

How hard is it to answer questions about 'your fight'. The UFc provides hotels, travel, assistants, catering…etc if you can't do that you don't deserve a contract IMO

  • He misses one in a decade and there are people already calling him ungrateful and an a*shole. Have you ever called in sick for work or school when you weren't that bad? If he was told he would lose $50000.00 prior he probably still would have left. Like it or not at Silvas level there are different rules than for other fighters. He paid his way to that level of power with his fists and a lot of hard work. If other fighters are going to cry about Silva getting 10 times the pay and benefits than they need to do what he did to get there or find a way like he did. Sure he missed a lower level media day once ever but it's not a very big deal and he could do that 5 more times and Dana would kiss his feet if there was a chance he might move on. Just watch gladiator and you will see if a fighter becomes big enough he becomes a force even against the emperor but it is well paid for and deserved unlike the emperor(Dana) who tramples others to get to where he is. Any fighter that goes against becoming Danas puppet like Fitch gets thrown away asap unless they get to Andersons level of importance. So in short, HAHA Dana!

  • Anderson Silva is known for being great to the media, I can't recall him ever missing or acting up in anyway way.

He missed one media day that was a very insignificant one, of course that's not cool but 50K is a joke.

Diaz missed a press conference when it was his shot at becoming the champ, he wasn't the longest reigning champ in history. Then Diaz missed a charity BJJ comp not long after.
That's a lot worse than what Anderson did.

  • Oh and I've been reading every saying this proves how much of a douchebag he is……. go watch the video of him surprising and consoling a child in hospital, something that really shows character.

    • What he did for the kid was great, but true character is what somebody does when nobody is watching. Anderson has been linked to multiple stories of acting like a **** to people when they approach him for an autograph or picture.

      • The video was taken by the doctor but that's beside the point. And my and my uncle got to walk right up to him and get his autograph. Sure he and everyone else may be a douche sometime when maybe your eating with ur family and ppl keep coming up to u.

        • Obviously there are going to be some resentful people who say those things, but there are also plenty of stories of men with their kids trying to get a picture with him while he is with a group of his friends and he just said no.

It's one of the reason the early smack talk by Chael hit home with a lot of people, because behind all the obvious bullshit he touched on Anderson's percieved arrogance (that many people have testified to witnessing).

I'm not trying to say that is exactly who he is. I'm simply saying that one video of him with a sick child is not the definition of his character either.

  • People hate on Anderson for showing how great he was against Demian Maia and because they are scared of him. They don't understand his greatness.

  • Not a big deal, IMO. ***** to lose 50 gs though. Even if you're making "Anderson SIlva" type money.

  • It's part of your JOB, Silva. Show UP. He should have been fined $250,000.

  • Give the guy a break, he had to deal with 2 fight build-ups with Chael Sonnen.. I think he's scarred by the experience.

  • Everybody needs to chill out. No body knows the reason. What if one of his kids are sick? Guys traveling all the time or in camps. He actually has a wife and kids too. Or maybe there was an emergency back home? I mean, no body knows. Until we do we shouldn't assume he skipped town on the day off just because he didn't feel like going.
