Alistair Overeem denied license by NSAC for nine months

The soap opera of Alistair Overeem‘s failed drug test from the UFC 146 press conference came to a decisive close today in Las Vegas, and the results were not favorable for the former title contender and his team. He was handed down a nine month suspension from the Commission. Overeem’s defense of taking an anti-inflammatory injection which, unbeknownst to Overeem, contained testosterone did not suffice. The commissioners were stern in dealing with Overeem from the beginning, not granting a continuance because the doctor who prescribed the injection to Overeem was indeed present at the hearing.

Overeem and his legal team took a strong focus on the injuries Overeem had sustained in order to necessitate anti-inflammatories. The injuries went back from his foot injury prior to fighting Fabricio Werdum last summer to current ankle and thigh problems stemming from his December bout with Brock Lesnar.

Admittedly taking injections prior to the press conference, on March 23, he denied any knowledge of having to submit to the pre-fight press conference drug test until being called back after he left the event. The prescribing doctor in question, Dr. Molina, appeared. He stated that he had added testosterone to the injection he prescribed Overeem, in order to heal his nagging injuries rather than have a leg up on his opponents. Molina ended up saying that he may have told Overeem what he was exactly taking after all.

The decision brought down by the NSAC was no surprise to many, as his 14:1 T:E ratios on the test were just too high to grant a license. The vial of the substance he produced was also under question for the simplicity of its label. Now that the UFC all-Heavyweight main card is in place, Overeem will have to wait and see if he can return as soon as the year-ending UFC card.

  • I sort of believed Alistair but his doctor really pointed e in the opposite direction. The doctor kept contradicting himself and then started saying he wasn’t sure, couldn’t remember etc.
Worse than that he has several felonies including assault and being charged for giving out some sort of drugs before.

  • I always said I would wait for the trial to judge and I have, sorry Alistair but I’ve lost almost all respect for you and hope you amend your ways during your 9 month ban.

  • He’ll be fighting for the title in 2013, we just gotta wait.

  • For Dream or Bellator perhaps. He has absolutely no credibility left whatsoever and I doubt the UFC will be in a hurry to give him a title shot any time soon.

  • By stopping the roids and losing some of that super man muscle? That would sort of prove the point of all the people that have been questioning the legitimacy of his accomplishments since he bulked up. He’s now in a lose-lose situation, if he keeps roiding he’ll probably get caught again, if he stops and shrinks to a more normal size no one is going to take him seriously again.

  • The silver lining for the UFC is that this incident reinforces it as the leading MMA organization with the most-tested fighters. Overeem has been on a tear for years, amid constant steroid allegations…. Then he comes to the UFC and gets busted in 6 months.

  • s**t happens.
im still a fan, im still team overeem.
i supported sean sherk through his ordeal and although mr.sonnen admitted to his boo-boo, i still dig the cat megaloads.
YES, fighters shouldnt use that s**t but it is what it is…

still a good card to come ahead…

  • man. how is it, he knew it was coming and took 2 weeks to come up with a bunk excuse. should have that shit ready. delaying looks worse, might not have helped , but shit, act like you know whats up right away, not like you are taking time scrambling for a false reason

  • Confused right now, As i had read it was the ribs as overeem said but the doctor says its a foot/tight injury. I’m kinda skeptical

  • He’s a big draw. This steroid business has created more controversy. The UFC doesn’t punish PED users by cutting them if they know there is money to be made off them.

  • Horsemeat….

  • The doctor “added” testosterone to the injection, and says he “may” have told Alistair? Who is his doctor? Conrad Murray?

  • Hopefully JDS keeps winning and keeps the belt, so when Alisttair does come back, they can fight

  • Dr,,,,Evil.

  • Boo hoo, Over-Roid, don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time…….

“I had no idea”, yeah sure…. total BS.

  • Injecting himself before a press conference??! What a dumb decision to make…The Reem not only lost at least $2 or 3 million in forfeiting the championship shot, he’s most likely lost his reputation and credibility for good…Hope, though, he’ll prove everyone wrong and come back stronger to reclaim the UFC crown……Hector Lombard has just signed with the UFC…Just wanted to end this on a happy note…

Overeem is an Innocent and Clean fighter ,he was totally UNAWARE that the reason behind his super lean muscle mass was the Steroid that his doctor uses to put in his medicine.

Overeem genuinely believed that he gained muscles because he eats a lot of Horse Meat.
His Nutritionist told him that he’s big because of horse meat ,so he kept eating it, without knowing the “real” cause of his muscle size.

Overeem is honest and clean ! As MMA fans , we should trust him.

  • This is a good day for the sport of Mma.

  • ….horsesh!t

prior to the UFC 146 press conference in March, I aggravated an old rib injury on my left side. My doctor prescribed, and I accepted, an anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone. I was completely unaware that testosterone was one of the ingredients in the medication. Although I was unaware, I do realize it is my job to know what I am putting into my body.

  • I’m so annoyed with Overeem. F***ing cheat. Instead of owning up to what he did like a REAL MAN or like Thiago Silva did, he’s tried to insult everyones intelligence with lies.

  • Exactly… Its unbelievable how PC and in denial most people are in regard to his OBVIOUS performance enhancement habits… the guy has been cheating for years, this should piss EVERYONE off…

    “Anabolistair Overoid?”

  • Their main point was saying he took the injection for a rib injury

  • I like Reem still. Him and JDS needs to happen at some point 🙂
