8,345 spectators make Bowles vs Cruz fifth-biggest WEC event everPosted on March 7, 2010, 05:55 AM by Anton Gurevich
World Extreme Cagefighting Chairman proudly announced at the WEC 47 post-fight press conference that 8,345 spectators entered the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, making it the fifth-highest attendance to witness a WEC event. Harris told MMAJunkie.com that it is the name of the Ultimate Fighting Championship that helped to promote the event, convincing fans that they are about to see a class show:
"The UFC came into this market and definitely laid the ground work for us. The UFC is obviously the juggernaut, and I think people who came to our show tonight who are familiar with the UFC knew the kind of quality production and the kind quality of event that the UFC had done here and that they could expect the same with the WEC."
WEC's next event (Aldo vs Faber) will be held at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, which is very familiar to the WEC fans. Three out of five top attendance WEC events were held at the venue, and it looks like the promotion's debut on Pay-per-View featuring stars like Urijah Faber, Jose Aldo, Mike Brown, Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, has a good chance to break the current record that stands on 13,027 spectators.
- WEC 41 (ARCO Arena - Sacramento, Calif.): 13,027
