WSOF 11 Results: Justin Gaethje Finishes Nick Newell In Round Two

Gaethje Wins PNG

World Series of Fighting 11 started the marathon MMA weekend earlier, with four fights scheduled on the NBC main card. First was Melvin Guillard against Geisas Cavalcante, and ‘The Young Assassin’ made a good impression in his promotional debut. After an even first round, Guillard rocked ‘JZ’ with punches, although the referee’s stoppage may have been slightly premature.

Next up was notorious fat gut Cody Bollinger vs. Pablo Alfonso at bantamweight, although only Alfonso could actually make weight. The extra weight didn’t seem to hinder Bollinger, as he submitted Alfonso in the opening stanza by rear naked choke. Onwards now to the co-main of the evening, and it was UFC veterans Jon Fitch and Dennis Hallman at catchweight.

Fitch was predictably active on the ground, taking down ‘Superman’ at the beginning of each round, and staying there. Hallman was exhausted by the end of round two, and ate some really big punches on the mat in the last round. Good win for Fitch. On to the main event, and Elite XC veteran Nick Newell faces off against Justin Gaethje for the WSOF lightweight title.

This was a really exciting fight, and Newell showed some great heart to survive the opening storm from ‘Highlight’. Unfortunately for Newell, who is an absolute warrior, he was just tagged at will by Gaethje. Newell was nearly stopped after a nasty cut due to elbows, and eventually succumbed to a big right hand by ‘Highlight’ for the second round TKO.
