POLL: Who Do You Think Deserves The Next Welterweight Title Shot

The UFC’s marquee division is stacked to the brim with potential title contenders and big names, but with that boost in talent comes a very messy title picture. UFC 171 saw Tyron Woodley, Hector Lombard and Johny Hendricks increase their stock in a big way, and guys like Rory MacDonald, Carlos Condit, Jake Ellenberger and Robbie Lawler remain in the mix.

The UFC is yet to officially announce the next fighter to receive the shot at glory, and Johny Hendricks’ recent injury woes do not help the situation. If I had a choice, I’d say Rory MacDonald gets the shot. I’m not the biggest ‘Ares’ fan, but the rankings need to be considered.

Of course there is always the Nick Diaz variable, but I hope that won’t happen. Who do you think deserves the next welterweight title shot, assuming the division isn’t held up by Hendricks’ injured elbow?

  1. 1. Other-please state
  2. 2. Rory MacDonald
  3. 3. Hector Lombard
  4. 4. Nick Diaz
  5. 5. Tyron Woodley
  6. 6. Carlos Condit
  7. 7. Robbie Lawler

Woodley's last five are a KO loss to Marquardt, a KO win over Heiron (who cares?), a loss to Shields, a win over Koscheck (again, who cares?) and a very lucky win that could have been called a no contest in many eyes last Saturday. How the hell is that in any way a title worthy run?

It seems like there still needs to be a #1 contender match up made. Maybe Rory vs woodley?

"Deserving" is a strong word. I'd say that's Lawler. Debatable decision, helluva fight, did good business wise, no losses in the division outside of the one to Hendricks.

    Diaz- no explanation needed.

Woodley- Possible best win, but lost two fights ago to Shields. And was plastered by Marquardt 20 months ago.

Rory- Second on the list, IMO. Probably the most high end wins with W's against Maia, Ellenberger, and Penn.

Lombard- Two great wins. Him and Woodley occupy the third spot, IMO.

Condit- Just lost and blew out his knee.

    This requires some MMA math.
Nick has lost last 2 one of them being to Condit has not beaten a top 10 WW.
Rory lost to Condit only beaten Maia and Ellenberger
Woodley beat Condit but with a bit of an asterisk
Woodley lost to Sheilds and Marquardt
Lombard beat Sheilds and Marquardt has not lost yet at WW.

For me its Lombard...but a Woodley v Lombard match might be a great #1 contenders match and you could do Rory v Nick Diaz....Lawler vs Ellenberg or Marquardt.

Also Rorys win over Maia made him look really bad in R1. His skill set vs Maias while both are fresh was not good. If it weren't for Maia gassing himself that fight was no contest. I need to so Rory be dominant from the get go like Lombard or Woodley because Hendricks can bang for 5 rounds and usually doesn't need that many.

I was going for Maia in that fight, but let's be fair here. I think the repeated kicks to the gut in Round 2 had a lot to do with Maia gassing.

Matt Brown vs Nick Diaz or Matt Brown vs Lawler will be guaranteed fight of the night if not the year. GOD please let Brown v Diaz happen. I will be Nick will avoid that fight like the plague....that is a high risk low reward fight for him. However, it could be epic

I picked Lawler since the question is who is most deserving. I think it's pretty funny how clear it was that Robbie inflicted the most damage. And after everything Hendricks has said about GSP in the past, He goes for a lay n pray takedown in the 5th round and does nothing with it but run down the clock. What a hypocrite.

Except GSP did that for most of his career and Hendricks banged 4.75 rounds and only layed and prayed for a minute and a half. Not really hypocritical.

The only guy that makes sense to me is Lombard. He is only on a two fight win streak at WW but it is still a cleaner case than anyone else can make. Woodley shouldn't even be in the conversation. He got lucky Sat, plain and simple. Before that he beat a washed up Kosckeck and Jay Heiron. Who cares? In addition he got destroyed by Marquardt (who Lombard recently assaulted) and was totally shut down by Jake Shields (who Lombard just totally shut down). Lawler for all intents and purposes just came up pretty even with Hendricks. I wouldn't complain if they did an instant rematch BUT it isn't what I want to see and it isn't necessary. As close as it was I didn't see any controversy and Hendricks had more points at the end. Moving on. The other guy people seem to be clamoring for is Rory MacDonald. I just don't see it. He is only one fight into the win column and he didn't win impressively. That fight showed me that Damian Maia is the better fighter and that Rory is the better athlete and that is it. For Rory to be a legitimate contender I would want to see him beat one more top ten guy and then get a number one challenger fight if he wins impressively. No one else is even close IMHO.

Matt Brown and Erik Silva get honorable mention but I think the winner of that fight needs one more win over a top guy before getting a shot at a contender fight let alone a title shot.
