Warrior Code: Rory MacDonald

I love this kid. I think he’s awesome.

I think the thing that I love about him the most is, for lack of a better term, his sociopath qualities as a fighter. He’s the same guy 24 hours a day. He never seems to be up or down. He never seems to buy into any trash talk and it seems impossible to get into his head. As MacDonald says, “it’s not personal, it’s business.”

To me, MacDonald seems like a machine and the machine’s life has been about one thing its whole life and that’s MMA. He’s just this dispassionate guy who truly seems to live for learning how to hurt people and then going into the Octagon and using the education.

Whether or not he’s champion this year, next year or the year after that, the reality is that this kid will hold a belt one day.

His fight with Ellenberger this coming Saturday should be epic and could well win a bonus for either or both, fighters. Regardless of who the winner might be, the welterweight division will have a new contender by the time it’s over.

Rory is surely exciting to watch but quite honestly, I don't think he is gonna go too far with that attitude. This whole 'hurting-my-opponent" thing is a bit ridiculous. To be honest, he will stop saying this as soon he goes on the receiving end of getting hurt instead. Condit did that to him and I am almost certain that someone else will do the same very soon.

I used to like Rory when I saw him first as I thought he was exciting to watch and was extremely humble to his opponents. That is something I respect in a fighter. But Rory is soon turning out to be quite a trash talker now especially before and after his fight with Penn. Well I can only hope that he gets beaten up a few times so that his head gets screwed tight between his shoulders for the rest of his MMA career.

P.S. Its not business it's a sport. Lets now confuse ourselves here.

Grand, Rory is not the first fighter to talk about hurting people and Ellenberger has said the same things about Rory, in terms of wanting to hurt him.

I think Rory has some type of mental disorder, not sure exactly what but you can kind of tell with his very slow speaking. Don't forget he's probably sustained a great deal of head trauma. I think his monotone voice an attitude is related to something else.

He seems very normal to me, period. He's simply a mission focused guy. Funny, he takes a lot of stick for saying he likes to hurt people, but he's not the first fighter to say such things and to further the point, I've heard Ellenberger (in this camp) say the same thing about hurting MacDonald.

I'd be worried if a fighter didn't want to hurt their opponent. Its nit a sparring match..Its kill or be killed

Ben Stein suffers from the same disorder. Psychologists refer to this as being LAME !!!

Is he really trying to justify his loss to Condit because the crowd shouted too loud ?

    No, I don't believe that's what he's saying.

You love this kid? He's a complete tool, and has a screw loose. It's only a matter if time before he goes postal. He'll end up in a mental institution.

Yeah, I love the kid and I couldn't disagree more with your synopsis of him. I mean seriously Cage, do you really think Rory is going to go on a shooting rampage and murder a bunch of people or that he exhibits any mental disorders that would cause him to be institutionalized?

If you think he's a "tool" that's fine, but the reality is that he's a successful young man, who has known from a very early age exactly what he's wanted out of life and he's well down the path of getting it. He's a very focused, dedicated and accomplished fellow and I see only reasons to respect him and not deride him.

    Each to their own, though.
