Multi-time UFC champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort continued his quest for another shot at the UFC Middleweight title, this time calling out Chris Weidman for a number one contender bout. Belfort revealed on Twitter that he mentioned Weidman in coversation with Ultimate Fighting Championship matchmaker Joe Silva:

"Guys I spoke to joe silva and ask to fight with the top contender #weidman here in brasil so I think this is the fight that will credence me to a title fight so that is what happened. I want the belt but I am not desperate I think weidman is the next for the belt, but Anderson silva deserve to see who is next .So let`s make this fight the next #contender belfort vs weidman the next contender for #andersonsilva"

Weidman responded to Belfort's tweet, claiming that he already proved his worth as the number one contender for Anderson Silva's belt. Belfort is 2-0 since losing to Silva at UFC 126, with convincing performances against Anthony Johnson in Brazil. "The Phenom" was slated to fight Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147, but was forced to pull out of the fight after breaking his hand.

I think Belfort vs Weidman is a great match up. I'd say Weidman is one win away from a title shot. If he beats Vitor, he deserves a fight with the Spider.

I'd hate to see Anderson Silva fight another wrestler, but I have to agree with you completely.

I think both guys are 1 away. Winner of the fight would undoubtedly be the #1 contender and a legit threat

Belfort vs Weidman would be cool to see, but I would rather just see Silva Weidman. AS isnt injured he should be fighting again in 3+- months. UFC needs to start pushing its title holders to fight as frequently as possible, Im sick of champs fighting once a year. That is the one thing I really admire in Jones.

Exactly why I was hoping for an upset in Sonnen fight. Its gotten to a point where Silva picks his fights and we often have to wait a whole year to see a title fight which to me is ridiculous

Im thinking it will be Belcher... Either way Vitor loses though. His time has come and gone. Vitor is basically the Brazilian Rich Franklin. I would rather see Weidman fight a true top 3 MW. No more freakshow/ratings fights. The best should fight the best. no more bs wondering who is who..

Why is Vitor's time over? hasn't he beaten everyone he has fought convincingly - Including Rich Franklin in the First Round? AS is the only one who has beaten him as far as I can remember - Am I wrong? Guess I should Google that.

But Seriously yes he is getting older but I don't see any signs of him slowing down. Anyone would have been stopped by that front kick - It's Anderson, he makes people look silly.

I'm going to play Devils Advocate to your comment and say I think Vitor's Experience and winning streak gives him a slight edge over Weidman and I do want to see them fight.

Also if that happens the UFC has my money on the A.S > Vitor rematch!!!

I sharped your reply. I can see your point, but I see Vitor as "passed his prime", "been there done that" style, while these young bucks (Bisp, Weid, Belch etc) are all on the upswing like Belfort was vs Wandy in UFC17). I guess if this Belfort v. Weidman fight happens, we will surely find out. The beauty of MMA!

@Hugeballs I totally agree with you. My issue is Vitor already fought Silva and lost in a bad way. He has not fought any of the top guys that are frequently mentioned (Munoz, Sonnen, Weidman, Bisping?) i dont agree that Wandi or Franklin have showed they are the top of the heat in the weight division. Vitor needs to fight either Bisping or Weidman or Sonnen to be considered..

For me I'd put Vitor and Belcher in a #1 contender fight, since they are the veterans that are likely on their last title run and they are both fan favourites.

I would give the following title shot to the winner of a Weidman Boetsch match, Weidman being the young star with time to grow and Boestch in the need if another top win to get the fans behind his title run.

Still think if Bisping beats Stann then it would be more "fair" to give him the shot.

His only definitive loss recently was to Hendo,

and the others were a highly controversial loss to Chael, and another controversial loss to Wandy who Bisping would more than likely beat now.

You probably are the only person in the world besides Michael Bisping who thinks his loss to Wanderlei was "controversial". Wandy nearly finished him more than once in that fight. It wasn't close.

Vitor Belfort had his chance to fight AS last year and he blew it.

I would like to see Vitor vs. Silva in a rematch in the future--but I am more interested in seeing Weidman fight Siva next.

Alan Belcher seems to have been left out of upcoming fights, but he is another fighter I would like to see get a contender match with Bisping or Belfort.

Who did Belfort beat? Akiyama and Johnson--good wins, but not top tier wins. Belfort does need another fight, but preferably with another top 7 contender.

You might be able to argue if Vitor is relevant, but there's no denying that he wants to have the chance to answer that question himself.

Other fighters could do well to emulate this 'go for broke' attitude...not that I'm looking at you Shogun...
