Vinny Magalhaes: Jones' ground game is suspect, Chael Sonnen would submit him off his back
Posted on October 21, 2012, 02:42 PM by Anton GurevichBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu extraordinaire and TUF 8 finalist, Vinny Magalhaes, shared his thoughts about the upcoming fight between Chael Sonnen and Jones "Bones" Jones. According to Magalhaes, Sonnen has what it takes to submit the reigning UFC Light Heavyweight champion, especially after Vitor Belfort's armbar attempt at UFC 152.
Magalhaes helped Chael Sonnen to prepare for his rematch with Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Sonnen showed signs of improvement in the way he fought Silva in the first round, but unfortunately for the Oregonian, his arch-nemesis got his hand raised after a brutal blitz in Round 2.
Here's what Vinny Magalhaes had to say about Chael Sonnen's chances against Jon Jones (via MMA.tv):
"After watching Jon's last fight, I could just tell Chael to pull guard and he's likely to submit Jones. I don't know, I'm not going to disrespect the guy. He has an excellent overall game, incredible athlete. He's super young so he can get better in everything else. But his ground in his last fight was a little suspect. He got caught in an armbar by a guy who is not known for having great jiu-jitsu for MMA, even though Vitor's a black belt, he's not known for having great jiu-jitsu for MMA. And especially getting somebody in the submission off his back, it made things even more unbelievable.
Me judging as a technician, as an expert in jiu-jitsu, I don't think Jones has the kind of ground to handle a guy with incredible guard. I think I'm going to work on that with Chael, just work on his guard, pull guard and Chael will submit him off his back."

chael could not submit a tomato
Sonnen would triangle himself before he submits anyone off his back.
Makes perfect sense Chael is a lot better at BJJ than Vitor
I'll take Vinny Magalhaes' two cents over yours any day.
If the guys see's a weakness... Then there's more than likely a ****in weakness. And if he says Chael can submit him, than I'm sure it's very possible that Chael could submit him.
Have some more respect for the experts and people who have mastered their martial art.
Thanks Vinny - Comment of the year!
Talk about give away the game-plan?! Jones has adequate time to improve his jits.
chael couldnt submit a guy in a wheelchair...
Can anyone submit a tomato? How would they tap?
Are you implying that the Jiu-Jitsu skills of a garden vegetable are superior to those of Brian Stann?
Is it an heirloom? or a Roma? If it is a Roma..then that statement is just f**king ridiculous.
Schooled!
Yeah because he has such a keen eye for this stuff. Like how he guaranteed that Sonnen was going to submit Anderson. We all know what happened there
You have to take Vinny's opinion with a grain of salt Bryan since Vinny has been training Chael, of course he is going to support his guy, it would be like Big Nog saying Silva can submit Chael. Are you also saying before Vinny made this statement you thought Chael had better BJJ than Vitor?
Definitely not, and I see the bias. But too many people think they know better than the fighters. It can get kind of annoying. Some of these guys just need to put things in perspective and realize that they don't know anything in comparison to some of these top level athlete's.
Even myself, I've trained quite a bit and there are still naunces and intricate cues I won't pick up but an expert would.
I see exaggerations on both sides and usually when that's the case, the truth is somewhere in the middle. The guy saying he couldn't submit a Tomato is a retard because he's submitted top level fighters like Brian Stann very easily. But Vinny saying he can submit Jones is likely unrealistic.
So the truth? Chael Sonnen is a hard working fighter and very talented grappler, who has much better than average Jiu-Jitsu Offense and Defense and possibly the best wrestling in MMA next to Cormier.
Sure. And Sonnen's ground game is nothing but stellar
I love this. This is awesome.
anyone who trashes a certain part of a fighters game should state there own experience in the matter first!
always ppl who have never done any training in the sport or not even had a real fight that talk shit!
i`m no pro but having watched ufc for the last ten years and done wado-ryu karate 4yrs, boxing 1 year currently training BJJ and muay thai for the last 4 months i canusually see and know when there is a hole in some ones game and sonnen is not that bad at BJJ there is a constant battle on the ground most dont notice. sonnen just sometimes loses focus and cares more about punching the opponent in the face. lol
(SO IF THIS GUY WITH HIS VAST EXPERIENCE SAYS SOMETHING ON THE MATTER, I BELIEVE HIM!)
I can sort of get where your coming from but if your saying you are akin to Vinny because you grappled for 4 months... Vinny has probably been grappling since he was like 4 never mind for the last 4 months.
If Vinny sees a weakness and he is being serious then it is probably there but it does not mean Sonnen will be able to exploit it
in no way did i say i was akin to vinny. i was saying if i can spot a few weaknesses a guy with his jits can see many holes and how to exploit it.
and ppl are not giving sonnen the credit he is due, if he has reached the top of the ufc he must have credible jits.
I love this kind of logic, I am sure that if an astronaut told you that the moon is actually a flat disk you'd just take his word for it.
If Vinney was that good in his art, then he should of won TUF.
I dont know where he got his analysis of Chael. I think Vinny is full of crap.
He is just guesstimating...
First of all, the only way logically a person can make an analysis is by either statistics or past performance. I dont think anyone can count Chael submitting Stann. Stann cannot wrestle worht beans nor is his JJ at a reasonable level. After that...Chael hasnt done crap in the last years in submitting anyone, just the opposite, he was submitted by Anderson.
Jones & Chael's wrestling are probabaly comparable...both college level...very good
So how is chael going to submit?
He's the reigning ADCC Openweight Champion, so yes, he is "that good in his art".
That said, Vinny stuck both his feet in his mouth here. That was one of the most preposterous statements in MMA history.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Anyone taking Vinny serious needs to understand something.... he is not being serious. Vinny is one of the best no-gi grapplers on the planet and if you think he doesn't know what he is talking about then I'm not going to convince you if he can't.
Sonnen submitting Jones is as likely as Pat Barry submitting Frank Mir
Hey Mousasi.....ADCC openweight champion is Andre Galvao.....
He was thinking of HW.
Yes, that is weak apparently.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Vinny Magalhaes: "Jones' ground game is suspect, Chael Sonnen would submit him off his back"
Cookie77: "Too bad that Cheal will get KTFO..."
LOL
Submit him off his back.......Phhhhhhtttttttt!!!! LOL.
This article is pure bulla. Jones makes one mistake and all of a sudden the most dominant LHW ever is at serious at risk by Sonnen off his back? Did DW throw this guy a wedge to talk up this fight/ We all know Sonnen has nothing to offer Jones. Against Silva he had a chance as a strong wrestler, against Jones there is nowhere where Jones is not superior.
This is what happens when guys see it does a career good to shoot off at the mouth with outlandish BS.
If Jones's ground game is suspect then Machida's and Rua's must be horrible.
This guy hasn't seen any of Jones' fights, huh?
Has this EVER worked?
This was not a response to myself. Seriously, delete the whole thread.
I don't like Sonnen at all, but Jones ground game is not as 'suspect' as Vinny's stand up.
Yes Chael, listen to Vinny... he knows what he's talking about.... pull guard immediately! Ignore those elbows raining on your cranium, they don't hurt at all... just ask Brandon Vera, LOL.
