UFC on Fuel TV 10 Recap: Fabricio Werdum Submits Big Nog in Record-Setting Night

UFC on Fuel TV 10 is in the books from Brazil, and the card was truly a showcase for the flagship martial art of Brazilian Jiujitsu, with a record-setting number of submission wins with 8. In the main event, Fabricio Werdum looked to make his case for a potential heavyweight title shot by beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

The fight was an excellent chess match between two BJJ masters, with Werdum scoring a single leg early and maintaining position. When the fight hit the ground in the second, Werdum looked for an armbar from below and earned the tap. The Werdum victory put an exclamation point on a night full of technical ground wizardry.

In the TUF: Brazil 2 Finale, William Patolino met Leonardo Santos for the contract. Patolino spent much of the first round in dominating position. The second opened with a striking exchange until Patolino again scored top position on the ground. However, Santos tripped his opponent and gained the mount. Continuing the trend of the evening, he submitted Patolino with an arm triangle as the second round came to a close.

Thiago Silva and Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante squared off in a battle of monstrous Muay Thai strikers. The bout started off as advertised, with both fighters throwing heavy power shots with bad intentions. Feijao landed a slick spinning back elbow early on, but ultimately Silva crushed Cavalcante with a ruthless flurry ended with a big uppercut. Big finish for Silva, who needed a win after having his two most recent victories turned into no contests.

Erick Silva came into his bout with Jason High looking to send a message, and he did just that by immediately locking High in a reverse triangle choke before transitioning into an armbar to finish the fight. Surprisingly enough, he bested the first two fights of the event with his creative submission.

Daniel Sarafian faced off with Eddie Mendez next, with Sarafian taking the action to the ground within the first two minutes. He achieved a quick mount and locked up a tight arm triangle choke from the top. Two fights, down, two submissions.

Rony Jason and Mike Wilkinson opened up the action at 145 lbs. Wilkinson scored a nice takedown early, it ended up being fool’s gold however. Jason locked up a super tight triangle from the bottom, making his opponent pass out. Impressive win for the TUF: Brazil 1 winner.
