UFC on FX 4 Results Recap: Gray Maynard defeats Clay Guida via Split Decision

UFC on FX is over from Atlantic City, New Jersey and the main event found Gray Maynard delivering an important win at Lightweight. After losing to Frankie Edgar last fall, Maynard needed a victory to stay relevant at 155 lbs. At least for the moment, he held off the many fighters breathing down his neck. The fights featured a lot of technical fighting, with decisions comprising 3 out of 4 main card bouts.

Lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Gray Maynard stayed on the feet for the first round, with Guida using his trademark movement to bloody Maynard’s nose. The Carpenter appeared to be just out of range of all Maynard’s strikes in the opening stanza. The second round started with an inadvertent eye poke from Guida. Guida did land a few solid combinations, but we saw more of the same from both in a rather uneventful round. The third saw Gray Maynard land some good punches, only to have Guida back away again. Maynard ended the round with some trash talk. The fourth round saw Gray Maynard land several knees from the clinch and taunt Guida. Maynard stopped a takedown and tried to lock on the Guillotine, but Guida bounced out to cheers from the crowd. Guida scored a nice headkick followed with punches early in the fifth, The Bully continued to stalk his opponent, but Guida’s evasiveness earned him a warning. Maynard put the fight up against the fence then landed some more knees as the crowd booed. Gray Maynard wins the five-round affair with a close Split Decision.

Again, Fisher could not be kept down. The second round saw some striking exchanges, with Stout again scoring a takedown and keeping in control from the top position. Stout appeared to have won the round. The final round saw some good striking from both until Stout took it to the ground. Stout utilized some great combinations to close the third round, bloodying Fisher. Sam Stout wins the rubber match with a Unanimous Decision.

T.J. Waldburger landed a great straight in the first round, rocking Brian Ebersole. Waldburger eventually gained an advantageous position and locked in a tight D’Arce choke. Amazingly, Brian Ebersole did not submit. Round 2 saw the two fighters going to the ground early, with an Omaplata attempt from Waldburger. Ebersole again showed great submission defense, stopping both armbar and triangle attempts. Ebersole looked fresher at the start of the third, trying a cartwheel kick and scoring a takedown. He finished the round out with some strikes from top position. Ebersole wins the round and the fight with a Unanimous Decision.

Lightweights Cub Swanson and Ross Pearson came out swinging in the opening Main Card bout. Pearson was rocked early by a big punch, but recovered well. Swanson scored a Capoeira-style kick and some subsequent upkicks, with a few hard punches from Pearson on the ground. In the second, Cub Swanson landed a front kick and some good shots that floored Pearson, earning the TKO stoppage.
