Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida, came one step closer to a shot at the title, after knocking out Ryan Bader in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 4 in Los Angeles, California.

Lyoto Machida opened in his traditional Shotokan Karate stance, with Ryan Bader struggling to fight the right striking distance. Bader went in and out, trying to get a hold of Machida, but "The Dragon" played his game and responded with strikes on the counter. Strong knees, hooks and leg kicks frustrated Ryan Bader, as the fight went into the second round.

After the break, it was more of the same for Lyoto Machida. The Brazilian, who came in to this fight at 201lbs, was light on his feet, forcing Ryan Bader to give up on his defensive mechanisms. Bader decided "enough is enough", and dived in to close the striking range from Machida. In response, "The Dragon" unleashed a short striking combination that sent the Sith Lord down to the canvas. Machida followed up with more punches, as the referee stopped the action at 1:32 minutes into Round 2.

Machida is now the only man to ever KO/TKO Ryan Bader, improving his record to 18-3. Bader drops down to 14-3, and now finds himself out of the title shot picture.

I don't agree with Machida getting the title shot against Jones. Yea he got a KO punch against Ryan Bader but he just a title fight to Jones in his last fight, and is 2-3 in his last 5 (2-4 in his last 6 if you count his first fight with Shogun that he really lost but was given to him).

You make a good point but I think a part of the reason that he got the nod is because he's the only guy to even win a round against Jones. I don't see Rua challenging Jones unless he completely throws caution to the wind but Vera surprised me a bit tonight and had he won, he just might have the range and style to beat Jones (with the right state of mind).

I would've liked to see Machida get one more win - he is only 1 fight removed from the title shot and being choked out.

That being said he looked incredible tonight, probably his best performance, he is easily the best challenger after Hendo and IMO he is actually a threat.

I don't know what he did following the loss to Rampage but he has looked better every fight - Crane kick KO over an all time great, beat Jones in first round and looked brilliant, outclassed Bader before knocking him out cold.

If he improves once again coming in to the next fight could be very interesting.

I'm glad he is getting the title shot next as well in stead of doing the trilogy with Shogun... I wouldn't like Rua's chances after watching tonight's fights.

i don't think shogun or machida won THAT convincingly to get a title shot amongst the 'who' should get a title fight.

i think machida should fight shogun for the right for title, that would make sense.
