Seriously, why has Kongo never tried LHW? He weighed in at 231, and that thing he was wearing around his neck looked like it might weigh a couple pounds. I believe that makes him about the same weight as Jon Jones.

Doesn't he normally come in around 240?

Maybe he just never thought he'd make it. I'd like to see him try it, now that you bring it up.

He's been as high as 239, but he's usually in the low 230s - sometimes even lighter. Here are his UFC weigh in results.

    UFC 144: 229

    UFC 137: 234

    UFC on Versus 4: 234.4

    UFC 120: 228

    UFC on Versus 1: 237

    UFC 107: 239

    UFC 99: 230

    UFC 97: 232

    UFC 92: 233

    UFC 87: 235

    UFC 82: 233.5

    UFC 75: 231

    UFC 70: 229

UFC 64: The internet has failed me. *facepolm* :-)

    UFC 62: 230

UFC 61: The internet has failed me. *facepolm* :-)

He could be a monster at 205 with his reach and power, and there's no question he could make the weight. The biggest concern would probably be his speed at that weight.

Interesting fact: Kongo is 3rd all time in UFC heavyweight bouts with 16, trailing only Frank Mir (20) and Tank Abbott (18). He is also third all time in UFC heavyweight wins with 10, trailing only Mir (14) and Randy Couture (11). His longevity and activity are pretty impressive.

Ah, thanks for that researche. I had thought he came in in the high 230's more often.

Crazy stuff at the end too, and to think I thought he was going to get beat up by Gilbert Aldana.

Back when he started fighting in the UFC, 235 was a decent sized heavyweight. Couture was the champ at around 220-225, and guys like Cro Cop often fought at around that weight too. Now, he's probably one of the lightest, if not the lightest HW in the UFC.

Cro Cop was even smaller than that man. he barely pushed 215 at certain points in his PRIDE career. However, he did gain a bit when he entered the UFC.

Don't forget Vera either. That guy was never over 225.

That's a good point about Cro Cop and Vera, but I think those days are over. You have guys like Chael who are essentially the same size as that (Mike Dolce estimated he was 208-212 during his fight with Silva) competing at 185 now. I don't know why you would want to put yourself at a competitive disadvantage.

Guys like Velasquez and JDS are scary enough when you are 20 pounds bigger than them...let alone the other way around. Can you imagine what JDS would do to Vera?

    Yea, I agree.

I think you were spot on saying Jones is around Kongo's size too. He's always back up to at least 225 when he's tweeting before he goes to bed after weigh ins. He says he doesn't get much higher than that either, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he hits the cage at 230 regularly.

The top ten (or so) at HW for UFC fighters goes like this: JDS, Cain, Overeem, Carwin, Werdum, Mir, Nelson, Big Nog, Travis Browne, Stefan Struve (that was just off the top of my head so I might have missed somebody). Out of all those guys I believe the smallest ones are JDS and Werdum (and Cain not far behind).

That sounds about right...JDS, Werdum, and Cain weighed in at 239, 246, and 240 respectively for their last fights, so even those guys are a little bigger than Kongo...

Another issue is that Kongo's upper body is ridiculously huge, which is great if you're a body builder, but not so great for combat sports. At some point you start losing speed and flexibility. I really don't think he's at his optimum weight anyway.

I think the cut would be a challenge for him.... look at his build... it isn't like he is "Big Country" with plenty of fat to spare. He's all muscle.

I'd like to see him at 205 as well.. but... again... I think the cut is unrealistic.

Dude, fat makes it HARDER to cut weight, not easier. When you cut weight, you are just losing water weight. Since muscle contains far more water than fat, the more ripped you are, the faster it comes off. He could easily lose 5 pounds of muscle and make a 20 pound cut. It's pretty standard for guys fighting at 205. It's not unrealistic at all.

Notice how Lombard had to put his shoes on before he stood next to Boetsch? And he still looked 3 inches shorter?

This is it for Faber. I'm sick of seeing him getting a chance to win UFC Gold. Either he does it or not. Quit giving this guy a chance, and No Faber should not be in the UFC Hall of Fame. He hasn't done anything special IMO, and has never won a UFC belt. Why should he be in the UFC hall of fame?
