The UFC Releases Official Statement On Vitor Belfort’s NSAC Application

UFC middleweight Vitor Belfort has been the subject of numerous headaches for his employers in the past year; having admitted to taking the controversial TRT treatment back in early 2013, ‘The Phenom’ was then barred from getting a license with the NSAC. This meant that the Brazilian was confined to competing in Brazil, although his impressive three-fight KO spree was nothing to complain about.

Then, earlier this year, TRT was outlawed across the board, so good news right? Not quite, this meant that Belfort was forced from his UFC 173 title fight with Chris Weidman, to allow him time to get his T-levels back to normal. Then he stepped up to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 when Wanderlei Silva dodged a surprise drugs test, only to find out that ‘The Phenom’ is yet to be licensed, and that he failed a surprise drug test by the NSAC in February.

Amidst the chaos surrounding whether or not Belfort will get licensed to fight Chael P, Belfort admitted that he had failed the test administered by the NSAC back in Feb, and it seems his employers are standing behind him. Check out the official statement released over at UFC.com:

“The UFC organization supports Vitor Belfort’s application for a license to compete in Nevada, and we respect the Nevada Athletic Commission and its licensing process. Pending Commission approval, we look forward to a great fight between Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 on July 5.”

It seems that through all the woe and troubles that Belfort has caused, he still has a friend in Zuffa. It’s either that, or simply some wishful thinking from the promotion that probably wants to limit the damage caused by ‘The Axe Murderer’ and his ‘test ducking’ antics. So what happens if Belfort’s application is denied?

Will the UFC be as supportive if ‘The Phenom’ is unable to make the date in July?
