Stephen Thompson Outclasses Jorge Masvidal In NYC

Stephen Thompson took a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal.

The second bout on the UFC 217 main card featured a welterweight battle between Thompson and Masvidal. The action took place inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Thompson went high with a kick early, but Masvidal answered with a leg kick. A jab had “Gamebred” off balanced briefly. A side kick to the body was there for Thompson. Masvidal had trouble timing the rhythm of Thompson in round one.

Another side kick to the body connected for Thompson. A right hand was there for “Wonderboy.” A front leg side kick dropped Masvidal. A straight left hand landed for Thompson. Round one was all “Wonderboy.”

The side kicks gave Masvidal fits early in the second round. Masvidal pushed his opponent against the fence and fired off combinations. Thompson dropped Masvidal with a right hand. “Gamebred” got back up.

Another side kick to the body found the mark for Thompson. A left hand connected for “Wonderboy.” A hook was there for Masvidal. Round two was once again all Thompson.

Masvidal fired off a leg kick early in the final frame. He shot in and landed a knee to the body. Thompson connected with a one-two combination. He got in a right hand over the top. He went for a spinning wheel kick. The two swung with Thompson landing more. A left hook was there for “Wonderboy.” The round came to a close with Thompson catching a kick and landing strikes.

All three judges scored the fight for Thompson.

Final Result: Stephen Thompson def. Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
