UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon "Bones" Jones appeared in Binghamton city court yesterday morning to request a delay in his sentencing for DWI, because he has not completed a two-day drug and alcohol evaluation at a facility in Tompkins County. The judge gave Jones three weeks to complete the evaluation and his new sentencing date is scheduled for July 31.

Jones was arrested and charged with DWI after crashing his 2012 Bentley into a utility pole, no other vehicles were involved, but two of Jones' passengers were injured. Jones pled guilty to the DWI charge.

Under his plea bargain with the District Attorney’s office of Broome, New York, Jones is expected to receive one-year conditional dischargeand pay a fine of up to $1,500. In addition, he would  be required to install ignition interlock devices in his vehicles, pay restitution for damage, undergo a substance dependency evaluation and attend a victim impact class.

Jones' lawyers released the following statement yesterday, the first official statement from Jones since the accident: "Mr. Jones wishes to express the following to his fans, friends, and, most of all, his family: By pleading guilty on May 29, Mr. Jones accepted responsibility for his actions. This process has been a learning experience for this young man. He is remorseful for his conduct, but thankful for the opportunity to accept responsibility and to grow as a person. This experience has motivated Mr. Jones to achieve his maximum potential both professionally and personally.”

The outcome of Jones’ sentencing is not expected to affect the scheduling of his UFC 151 main event title defense against Dan Henderson.

He is not going to jail for his first offense, he will get community service, and a fine at most.

It seems to be a pretty minor offence, no one got seriously hurt and he is young.

    hey lads,

new to this and it's my first post.

just wanted to know, if this DWI case was you or me (normal joe) in the states (me from Ireland) would we definitely get some time in prison or could we walk free. just asking cause I know ye (America) give out some hard time to criminals. will he (bones) get some leniency because he has money and fame. I'm thinking he'll get a slap on the hand of some sort and told to behave. if he only gets a slap is this fair. (not that I want to see him do life) but the law is the law and it should be the same for all.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Peace to all.

It depends how much you were over the legal limit and the damage you did it. If you killed or injured someone youd for sure go to prison. If you were over the legal limit by a lot then youd most likely go to prison. If you werent over by much and no real damage was done then youd probably get a similar punishment to this. They always take it on a case by case nature and it does matter whether you show remorse, plead guilty, show high potential for never recommitting the crime etc. It's not JUST about sending everyone to prison as punishment, more and more theyre pushing rehabilitation and putting people on good behaviour bonds etc because prison doesnt solve everything
