Rory MacDonald considers move to Middleweight

Rory MacDonald is already a pretty big welterweight. But perhaps it’s the fact that his training partner Georges St-Pierre that has rising star Rory McDonald considering a move to middleweight.

Prior to UFC 154, MacDonald spoke at a Q&A session in Montreal to discuss a number of things regarding his career. But the statement that caught most ears was the fact that he will never fight GSP and feels that a move to middleweight is pretty much inevitable.

“Me and George are not going to fight,” he said about the current welterweight kingpin. Even though his fight at UFC on Fox 5 on December 8 could put him closer to a title, MacDonald says that he would never turn on the team that helped him become the fighter he is today. “We’re friends and very close training partners. It’s just not going to happen…I don’t want to sacrifice a friendship and being able to train at Tristar.”

Although he wouldn’t say it outright, this would likely lead to the Canadian making a move to 185 lbs.

“Maybe,” he said when asked about a move up in weight. “I no doubt will fight at middleweight at some point in my career. Not because I’m too big for 170 lbs. I just want to fight at middleweight as well. We’ll see.”

If MacDonald gets past Penn on Dec. 8, he may start looking at his options.
