Robbie Lawler And Rory MacDonald Will Clash At UFC 167

Robbie Lawler finds himself in a great position at UFC 167, as news emerges that ‘Ruthless’ has been paired up with top contender Rory MacDonald. Since rejoining the UFC, Lawler has put the screws to Josh Koscheck at UFC 157 and then flattening Bobby Voelker at UFC on Fox 8.

The same event played host to Mac D’s most recent fight, a less than entertaining demonstration of how to win a fight with a jab. Many expected a win against Ellenberger to be the ticket to a title shot for Ares, but it seems the sub par performance has set him back.

“Rory didn’t do anything to try and finish him and put a stamp on it and make a statement, not only to the world, but to the guys that are in the division.”

Dana White’s own words at the UFC on Fox 8 post fight conference, if MacDonald had looked to finish Ellenberger; he may be looking at another top three fight, or even a title shot. Has he landed in hot water at UFC 167?

Lawler is looking like a new fighter since rejoining the company in February. He looks more focused in his fights, and his finishing is more precise and cerebral. Although he has nine losses scattered on his record, Lawler is starting to look a legitimate force again.

At age 31, and having competed for 12 years, Lawler is truly getting his second wind as a fighter. MacDonald is young and hungry, but Lawler has the edge in experience. It’s the age-old tale of battle scarred veteran vs. the young lion.

Whatever the case, Lawler will be looking for the knockout. Mac D is going to have to be on his toes, as I don’t think there are many people who could take a flush hook on the chin from Lawler.

Anybody think that Ruthless can succeed where Ellenberger failed?
