Randy Couture thinks Chael Sonnen has "great opportunity" to beat Jon Jones

According to Vegas oddsmakers, Chael Sonnen has little to no chance of beating Jon Jones when the two meet next April. Most fans think that Sonnen doesn't think he even deserves to get a crack at the UFC light heavyweight title considering that he's done nothing in the division to prove he deserves it. Randy Couture thinks that his former training partner at Team Quest has a pretty damn good shot at scoring a major upset.

"Chael has a great opportunity to win this fight actually," Couture said on Spike TV's MMA Uncensored Live. "Technically I see a similar style fight as Anderson Silva. If he wades through him and makes Jon Jones wrestle him the entire fight, I think he can win that."

This shocking revelation by Couture may not be all that surprising when you consider the source. Couture was given a title shot against Tim Sylvia back in 2007 after taking two years off and moving up from 205 to heavyweight. Most thought that he would be too small to beat Sylvia but Couture systematically took him apart for five rounds and won his 5th title. Couture believes that Sonnen's wrestling base will be the great equalizer against the seemingly unbeatable Jones.

"He can do it, but he needs that gameplan. He needs to make it a wrestling match, start to finish."

Is there any merit to what Couture said?

The chance of Chael winning is as likely as Nick Diaz going two days straight without a bong.

against Silva Sonnen had good wrestling and a pressing style which Silva struggled with. The problem is that Jones is superior to Sonnen in ALL areas of MMA, wrestling included so Sonnen has NOTHING with which he can beat Jones so his only chance is a terrible mistake by Jones himself which is unlikely.

Makes a mockery of the belt and I lost respect for Jones accepting this fight given Sonnen is not even an established LHW nevermind a contender. He may have some decent scalps at MW but he's in a whole new league of quality at LHW. Still at least he is the opposite of Silva and choosing the baddest man there rather than has been cans.

Randy would be right except Jones is a phenomenal wrestler. If Chael couldn't dominate Bisping with wrestling then chances are he won't even getty Jones to the mat.

Randy never said that Chael would win. He said,"Chael has a great opportunity to win this fight actually".

Randy was not that far off...in fact, only 1 word. "Great" . Take that away and the statement is accurate for any match up on the planet. Hell , it still is accurate, it is a great opportunity for him. Now having a chance in hell is a totally different story.

Chael does have that gritty style of wrestling that works great in MMA, but Jones has a much better overall ground game. We haven't see Jones on his back much, and I don't think we will against Sonnen either. The only problem I see is the somewhat suspect submission defense of Jones. Yes I know, that sounds dumb, considering Sonnen's ability to get triangled by the NOS logo on the canvas, but Sonnen has methodically improved his jiu-jitsu over the last couple years, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him actively seeking submissions against Jones. That being said, I don't think Jones will put himself in a position to get subbed. I say he won't put himself in that position, because I don't think Sonnen has the strength or wrestling ability to put Jones in the position himself, it would take a mistake by Jones to open that window, and I don't see it happening. I have Jones by 2nd round GnP TKO.
