The recipe for the UFC 202 main event was made up of many crucial ingredients. Chance was the first additive after Nate Diaz would replace Rafael dos Anjos on 11 days notice at UFC 196. A rivalry like very few before was added in that short period of time, as Diaz and McGregor were brought to boil in no time. Eventually squaring off on March 5, the two bitter rivals were cooking with gas. The underdog victory earned by Diaz ensured there would be a second serving.

When UFC 202 came around there was a whole new set of circumstances to consider. Following the chaos at the pre-fight press conference, many felt Diaz was in the Irishman’s head. Revenge was the motivation for McGregor, a large payday and a repeat was intended for the Stockton brawler. ‘The Notorious’ and Diaz sure earned their pay checks on August 20 with a thrilling barn burner.

UFC 202

By the time UFC 202 came around we’d been talking about this rivalry for nearly six months. When Diaz and McGregor entered the octagon ad threw down hard for five rounds, we were reminded of exactly why. Some fans and pundits called it the greatest UFC fight of all-time. It was a real war, and eventually it was the Irish star who evened the score.

The rivalry has been placed in the slow cooker for the meantime, as UFC president Dana White flat-out denied Diaz’s request for a trilogy fight at this time. Doors to lightweight and of course featherweight have re-opened for McGregor, and Diaz says he’s happy to wait for the Irishman and their third fight to come around. Apparently Diaz doesn’t want to do that quietly though.
