Melendez Heartbroken, Thought He Did Enough to Take the Win

Last night UFC on Fox 7 title challenger Gilbert Melendez fought Ben Henderson in a closely contested battle. Melendez told Ariel Helwani that he was heartbroken, and that he knew he won the first two rounds. Bendo rebounded strong, but Melendez thought he had more energy to close out the fight and won the fifth round.

Melendez also acknowledged that he could have done a bit more to leave it all out in the Octagon. Still, Gilbert Melendez fought well and should be a mainstay in the UFC 155 lb. division for awhile. Who will be his next opponent?

That's exactly how it should have been scored as melendez won 3 rounds quite clearly IMO.

PS: All that oil flying off Henderson must have blurred the vision of some fans and judges.

I could see giving Melendez the win based on octagon control and landing the more significant strikes but I scored the fight for Benson based on landing more strikes. That said I think that the fight was super close and I would pick Gil to win the rematch based on the fact that he was coming off of a long lay off and still did so well. Win or lose I think last night proved that Melendez is the best guy currently fighting at 155. This is going to play out like Cain V JDS I and II except that Gil just dropped the decision. In round one Benson didn't know what the hell to do.

Melendez is the best guy at 155? definitely not. Ben is at least equal if not better, Maynard would beat him and Pettis (if you count him) would destroy him.

Henderson would lose to Melendez, Maynard, Edgar, Penn, Chandler, Pettis, Aldo, and have a toss up with Alvarez IMO.

Gilbert would have a much better chance against all of those guys. However, he lost. Probably lost it on the couple seconds at the end of the third where he tripped after Ben missed a kick (and then Ben jumped on him quick and threw a bunch of elbows that mostly missed and hit arms). So, yea.

Ben is just extremely lucky with the judges. Its funny his name is Henderson because Dan had a run like this of close decision wins for a good time period.

I personally felt Melendez won..but it was so close that I wouldn't bit*h about it and I can see everyones point in how Henderson won.
But what I was surprised at was how good Melendez looked. I thought Henderson would dominate him totally GSP like.
He is definitely a contender if not a future champion.

@Evan; You really think Benson would lose to Maynard and Chandler? I am basing my statement that Gil is the best guy at 155 on how well he did against Henderson despite a long lay off. I actually think that aside from Edgar (who I think beat him twice) Henderson stacks up pretty well against most of those guys. I actually think Bendo V Maynard would get Benson arrested for *** crimes.

I understand that's your opinion, but I have no idea what you're basing it on.

Ben's only chance against Gray would be for him to tire out, and turn up the pressure later in rounds 3-5 (which is entirely possible). Other than that, he will have zippy success taking him down and throwing all those kicks will leave him open for Gray's power early. The only way I could see Ben winning is a close decision. However, I could see Gray stopping him and getting a decision also.

Chandler is the best LW in the world, IMO. Just doesn't have the guys available to fight to get his ranking any higher than 5 or 6.

I thought the same, I gave Melendez 3 out of 5 rounds. But I actually thought he won round 3 instead of the 5th.. But then again, maybe I wasn't paying that much attention.

Either way close fight, both guys deserved it. A rematch must be initiated.

I had melendez winning r 1,2,5 .....rounds three and four definetly went to Henderson.

Melendez wins on control, aggression but Henderson got the more strikes which gave him the three rounds

The luck bendover it's Henderson has been having, one might assume he's been greasing some palms, in fact he has, because apparently he had a hair cut prior to the show.

    Trivia.Questions...
    - Bendover and his girlfriend have a shared favourite film, your clue - the film has John Travolta in it...What's it called?

    - At the UFC end of year karaoke competition Benson will be singing ______ lightning?

    - Prior to becoming the least popular champion of any sport (ever), Benson worked in a cafe, the cafe was called "A _______ spoon cafe"

    - True or false, the cafe changed it's name to "A not so greasy spoon cafe" after he left?

I will pay a nickel for every ensuing joke, (no more than one joke per household)

I don't think either round 3 or 5 was clear enough that people could say defiantly one way or another who should have won those, it just comes down to opinion. Personally I scored 3,4,5 to Henderson based on just how much damage he did. Henderson didn't take any damage at all in the entire fight, that alone should give him the win.

I also don't think you should be able to get a belt from a split decision, you should TAKE the belt in my book.

I thought Benson had the win. He had 3 takedowns, two or 3 times he got to gils back and was landing significant strikes far more often. Gil did better than I thought he would and won 2 rounds in my book which I actually thought rounds 2,3,4 were his with r2 being by a hair. I also then thought if I made r2 a draw it would be his win by points or by damage take your pick.

Most of you guys are nothing but haters. Compustrike had Benson outstrike Gilbert 2-1. Just because you are the agresser doesnt mean you win. It did seem close but after seeing the compustrike stats, I couldnt argue with that.
