Matt Hughes says today's MMA fighters are "soft"
Posted on October 26, 2012, 07:38 PM by Andreas HaleIf there's anyone who could offer their personal take on the alarming number of injuries that have torn UFC cards to shreds over the past year, it would be hall of famer Matt Hughes. While appearing on the MMA Hour, the always outspoken 39-year-old gave his take on the injury epidemic.
"I haven't figured out why there's been more injuries now than when we were going. You know, eight years ago -- boy, that's a big number -- we were training everyday, and we were training hard. We just didn't get injuries, and I don't know why," Hughes said. As a fighter, Hughes has been in 54 fights and has the most wins in UFC history with 18. With so many rigorous training camps under his belt, even he is shocked by the number of fighters suffering injuries as of late.
But Hughes always has an answer or an opinion and his just might rub a few fighters the wrong way.
"I do think some of these guys are getting a little softer, to where, hey, if they're not 100-percent, they're just going to call off the fight," Hughes said while stating that he's never been 100% injury free heading into a fight. "There's been several fights, and I think Chuck Liddell would say the same thing, several fights where you're not 100-percent. You're just not 100-percent. And these guys today have to be 100-percent or they're not going to compete."
Do you agree with Hughes statements?

Comments
Matt Hughes has delivered another punch drunk comment.
The last thing a camp wants is a guy pulling from a fight, losing a pay day. Camps also don;t want their fighter going into a fight with injuries that will potentially put them at risk of further injury or that will cut them loose from the UFC.
There is a medical process and evaluation that guys go through before they pull from fights. If the guys didn't want the fight in the first instance they wouldn't have signed a contract.
Look at the dude glover fought last card and tell me these type of guys don't have heart.
.
I agree, Hughes has always struck me as a bit of a douche. His time in the lime light is over, just wanting to ruffle some feathers knowing he does not have to back up his words.
Mat and I are going hunting for humans later this month.
I agree with Hughes somewhat the problem now is money, and ZUFFA;s new insurance policy which is right around the time all the injuries started happening, before someone had to fight injured so they could claim they got hurt during the fight and have it medically covered or used their fight money to pay for an injury they sustained outside of the fight. Now fighters can pull out and have the medical bill handled with no worriest.
@David
Great point - I hadn't considered that.
Thanks
@David Saucier BINGO!!!!!
@infinite enigma.
Perhaps you can clear up the confusion.
What charachter attributes must someone possess in order to be a bit of a douche? What prevents Matt Hughes from being a total douche?
Whose feathers does he intend to ruffle as a result of this statement? How could you possibly know his intentions?
You have stated that he knows he doesn't have to back up his words. Question is, will you back up your words???
Good luck.
The comment you written its sound me like "I love when guys get injured and wait for fight five more months till fights".
Matt is right on this one. Todays fighters have the technique, the cardio, hell, even the looks for the femal fans, but they ain't got the balls!!
they are in a position now where a loss could cost them their job and seriously hurt their career. if i am not close to 100% or at least 80% no way i'd want to risk hurting my career for that.

I believe that fighters now days specially NEEDS to be 100% just because MMA has gotten to such an elite level that you NEED every single advantage that you can get. I remember the early days of the UFC with tough guys getting in the octagon and fight, if you have the same guys walk in and fight now they would absolutely get destroyed. Matt is correct about the training but mind you they don't get injured because their bodies where used to the training regiment of their based martial discipline, now to be on top or to even be in title contention you WILL NEED to cross train and if your body is not used to that kind of work out, the potential chance of injury increases.
I doubt there's one single explanation that covers all the injuries that have been happening. It wouldn't surprise me though, if some were due to 'cycling' problems.
@azzkika
Perhaps they could bring in Lance Armstrong, he's an excellent cyclist.
Lance might be the right man indeed...
That's all we need, there's enough TRT going onwithout throwing him into the mix
Jose Aldo pulled out of a fight because of a swollen foot.......
@bantam,
There are 26 bones in the human foot (28 if you include the sesamoid bones at the base of the big toes).
Because you're a "fan" making derogatory statements about someone whose pain you cannot understand let me explain it for you. If you cannot stand on your foot it's hard to move around.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure you watched Daniel of Karate Kid do a Crane Kick... but I hear Jose didn't want to take that option. He thought that not being able to stand and move effectively, or strike properly might mean he lost the fight.
Please go to your local thai boxing club and ask to kick the instructors shin or elbow full force. Then see if you feel like sparring with someone with a years experience. Then let me/ us know how that went.
I've had to pull out of a kickboxing match for the same reason. It is legit.
Why on earth would you not include the sesamestreet bones?!..... I have no idea about human biology ^.^
Don't ruin your legacy too, Hughes. Why can't these former greats just STFU, retire gracefully, and move on? Instead they all insist on making complete A$$ES out of themselves once they can no longer compete, and fans lose all respect.
Tito, Rampage (cry-baby), and all the other over-the-hill whiners need to take a page out of Randy Couture's book, and show some class in retirement.
I am no great fan of Hughes but he does raise a valid point. At the end of the day the guy has put it on the line and tested himself unlike us commentators on here.he has more right to air his view on MMA than any of us keyboard warriors. you may not agree with him but some twat telling him to STFU who hasn't even earned the right to even discuss on a par with the man is just immature ego.
I think Hughes is right. Back in the day, fighters would fight because they spent their money from a day job for training because they loved to and/or didn't make enough money to not take the fights that they got. Now, fighters get fame and a lot of money and sponsors because the growing popularity of the "sport". I love MMA but its gone from an incredibly entertaining sport to entertainment
The thing with Matt is he already is set for money out side of the ufc, so providing for his family and the people around him werent such a big concern for him because of his personal wealth. He just a rich rancher crying in his beer about people not being as tough, kinda a joke.
All athletes from the past say this about their modern day counterparts.
I wouldn't say they are soft but they have a lot more to think about and have to be smarter about it
I wonder what Matt Serra's opinion on this is?
i see where hughes is coming from but this is another SS. stupid statement
@David pretty much said it, that since ufc got insured a few years back fighters have been pulling injuries almost nonstop.
until hughes fought 3 times in one night in a grand prix tourny, i dont really want to hear his thoughts on soft fighters.
