Mark Hunt Talks TRT, Wants Alistair Overeem Rematch Next

Mark Hunt has become one of the most popular UFC heavyweights on the modern day circuit, after coming within inches of fading in to obscurity. ‘The Super Samoan’ was 5-6 when he joined the UFC, riding a five fight losing skid before his debut against Sean McCorkle.

It took McCorkle just over a minute to submit Hunt, and it seemed the Pride FC legend was on his way out of the sport. A rousing four fight/three KO spree earned Hunt a fight with Junior dos Santos at 160, but he was KO’d in three and then fought to an exciting draw with Antonio Silva at FN Brisbane.

With Hunt’s popularity at an all-time high, he spoke with MMA Canvas about a potential opponent for his next scrap:

“Rematches are always good. I’ve never lost a rematch with any fighter. I always like to avenge my losses, too. I saw Alistair in Japan (and) we were talking, he’s a nice guy but as a fighter, he’s got it over me, I’ve got to get it over this guy. It’s a match I’d like to have… the outcome won’t be the same.”

Hunt and Overeem first met under the Dream banner in 2008, ‘The Super Samoan’ was a very different fighter at that time and lost after being tapped by a Reem keylock. Hunt first spoke about a rematch with Overeem when the Dutch kickboxer failed his first drugs test in 2012. Perhaps Hunt’s new found fame will help aid his quest for the rematch.

“I’m considering (TRT) now, we’ll see what happens. I don’t feel cheated (by Bigfoot), yeah he failed a post fight drugs test, I feel cheated that I didn’t get the win. Whatever, it is what it is.”

I’m not too crazy about the way that TRT is taking over the sport of MMA, but it looks like it is emerging that way. With hands like Hunt’s, he probably won’t need any artificial assistance in putting lights out.

Hunt is a pretty down to earth guy, but also a savage in the cage. Knockout wins over Cheick Kongo, Stefan Struve and Chris Tuchscherer helped make ‘The Super Samoan’ a UFC favorite. His fight of the night against Silva in Brisbane solidified Hunt’s status as a legit force all the more. TRT aside, how awesome would it be to see Overeem and Hunt throw down in the UFC?
