Mark Munoz: After Weidman, I deserve a title shot
Posted on July 10, 2012, 08:26 PM by Mike SearsonMMA H.E.A.T.'s Karyn Bryant sat down with UFC Middleweight Mark Munoz and asked the "Filipino Wrecking Machine" about his upcoming fight with Chris Weidman, set for the main event at UFC ON FUEL TV, tomorrow night. Additionally, Munoz gives his thoughts about where he thinks he stands in the pecking order for a chance to fight for the title.
For tomorrow night's opponent, Chris Weidman, Munoz had nothing but praise: "He lost a lot of weight, around 30 lbs right before the fight (with Damien Maia), that's tough. To have the performance he had that's great to see the performance he had...he's a great fighter and he transitions between striking and wrestling and jiujitsu very well. I think it's going to be a fun fight."
On his cancelled bout with Chael Sonnen, Munoz admits it was a letdown, but he has gotten over it: "I was down in the dumps, but I'm living in the moment and planning for my future. I have a great group of guys around me, they are sharpening me and that's what it takes. I am trying to bring out the inner animal in me."
On prospects for a title shot, the "Filipino Wrecking Machine" is hungry for it: "People are talking about 'I need a title shot', but they either have losses to make up for. After i lost, I came back and I fought 4 fights undefeated, so when I win this fight, I deserve a title shot."
On the lighter side, Bryant then asked the "Filipino Wrecking Machine" 20 questions about life, his top 5 movies, his preferences in fast food, pick-up lines he has used and whether or not he is a "Star Wars" fan:

Big Munoz fan but I would like to see him get a win over a solid top 7 guy if he beats Weidman. Maybe the winner of Boetsch Lombard would be a good win #1 contender match?
He should be focusing on this fight more than what lies ahead, Weidman is no joke. Last guy to underestimate him, Tom Lawlor, woke up wondering why there's a doctor in his face.
Actually thinking about it, Mark probably deserves the shot but there are more deserving people - most notably Belcher and Bisping. I think those two need to go at it for the next shot and then Munoz, Belfort, Stann, Lombard and Boetsch sort out the following #1 contender.
Munoz is a class act in interviews...always cool.
So many guys now are wanting Silva's belt.....Bisping, Munoz, Lombard, Belfort, even rashad.
I think its most likely going to go to Bisping or Munoz if he can win.
I agree with what you have to say Keith - here's my take on things.
First Mark shouldn't be looking past his upcoming fight or you're right he could end waking up from an unexpected nap.
Second if he does in fact get passed this fight Bisping not knocking Belcher would be a fight I would like to see. I feel these two would be a great test for each other. Bisping impressed me against Chael and if Munoz could beat Bisping decisively than I feel AS would have his hands full.
Let's not forget Rashad has also shown his interest to fight AS but I think he would need to pay his dues and fight someone( Bisping would fit here too) as well before
having his chance.
Fun times in the MW division.
Yea I agree with all that, especially Rashad needing to do something at MW first. He is obviously a top level fighter but there are so many elite fighters in the mix at 185 Rashad would need to get at least two wins.
Ya if Rashad were to take two fights and win them it would help with the hype and in turn sell more tickets.
Would be a smart business move.
I would like one of those fights to be against Chael or Bisping.
I like munoz but he doesnt deserve a shot at the title YET, he hasnt beaten a top 5 guy. Yes if he wins, yes he will be on a 5 fight winning streak but only people he has beaten that is half decent is leben and weidman (if he wins). He needs to win another fight against the winner of lombard/boetsch. And the winner of bisping/stann should fight for the title. Would like to see bisping but lets see what happens.
As good as Mark is, look past somebody and get your light knocked out...And then there will be excuses: Oh I was injured, oh my pet gold fish died...
I think the next step for Mark would be Vs Bisping. Then the title shot I would say in November or December if Munoz gets pass Weidman Bisping vs Munoz.
After Weidman?? Munoz got a bad case of "looking too far ahead" does he?
