Lyoto Machida Wants A Rematch With Phil Davis

After a boring close fight against Phil Davis at UFC 163, Lyoto Machida lost a contoversial decision in the eyes of the judges. The Dragon has now been toppled from his number one contender spot, and will likely not recieve his long deserved rematch against Jon Jones.

When you consider that Glover Teixeira will get a title shot should he beat Ryan Bader, whom Machida knocked out, it certainly seems the MMA gods are taking a large dump on Machida. The fight was close, and there are argumentrs for both sides, and obviously Machida feels he won.

FYI, when it comes to this issue there are probably no MMA Gods, just Dana White, and the UFC. As far as Machida goes, his style makes for close fights because he never commits to exchanges, or rarely goes to the ground when fighting his opponents. Thus those of us who do not know about or understand his style (which probably includes the judges), would think that he was avoiding and that Phil Davis was pushing the action; however, that is how Machida pushes the action, he forces opponents to engage and to play his game. I believe that lack of fundamental understanding about what defines action, and octagon control is what lost Machida the fight.

its because the judges judge on aggression and cage control. to the untrained eye it seems like Machida lacks that but you're right, its just his style. new judging system needs to be brought in. Machida did good, not his best but good and so did Davis. in my eyes it was a split tie. a rematch definitely is in order because Machida doesn't deserve to drop that far in the rankings after all his hard work. its not fair to him.

All I can say is that if you leave in the judges hands then you better learn to live with the results. Else, learn to finish the Fcuking fight.

I clearly see that you disagree with what I feel about last night's fight. Your expression of disagreement is rather amusing to me as it makes me wonder what type of MMA background you come from.

My argument is that there were times Machida clearly had Davis on a back foot. Round one and again in Round 3, Machida clearly had the momentum and made some significant connections. Question is, why the hell did he not capitalize? Perhaps he thought that he has scored his points with the judges??

He countered rather well but never followed through, again, perhaps thinking that he scored enough for the round?

Machida remained reactive in all the three rounds and never tried to take the fight to Davis. Now, I completely believed that Machida won and was very surprised to hear the results but, he could have done a lot more damage than what he actually did.

Obviously you will disagree with all that and you will have your own views you showcase your knowledge of MMA. I would happy to be enlightened.

With Machida's talent, he should have finished the fight, Davies too. They are amongst the top fighters in the division, they should and could have done more.

Ya man neither guy looked close to finishing or did much damage at all.
This seems to be happening more and more.

It was close enough that I could see it being scored either way. But not getting a close decision when fighting in front of your hometown crowd? I thought Dragons didn't whine...

I doubt he would be getting the title shot, even if Lyoto had won. The evade and counter-strike thing only is exciting if Machida puts his opponents in bad positions.

It was a boring fight and I don't think Davis has moved much closer to a title shot either.

Why waste your time Machida. You're not getting any younger and you should not have been matched up with Davis anyways. Machida should have been fighting for belt by now.

Oh yea, Dana offered you the fight on 5 days notice.....What a joke UFC is

i find all the above comments respectable.
That been said to my eyes Machida clearly won the fight and it is puzzling to say the least ,to see all 3 judges scoring the fight in favor of Davis.
I mean a unanimous decision ???WTF have these guys benn smoking?

Agreed. I think it is the same old problem of giving take downs way too much importance.

    He should fight Mousasi.
    Why..?
Since there are no interesting opponents for Machida except a rematch or..... Mousasi. :)

Machida loves his point fighting style of "I hit you and ran away" but this time it didn't play in his favor. People are so tired of watching this "ellusive" decisions. People complain about GSP not being able to finish fights, but geez, at least he engages and tries to finish, right? Davis had to chase him all over the place and this time the dragon paid for it, lol. I agree, Mousasi would be a great match b/c he is one of the smartest fighters in MMA- super crafty and always has a super game plan.
