Junior dos Santos: Overeem deserves a beating, and I'm going to arrange that

It appears that the trash talk of Alistair Overeem is still under Junior dos Santos' skin. Speaking in an interview with Tatame.com, dos Santos had a few strong words about the former top contender to his title who was found to have elevated levels of Testosterone last April prior to UFC 146. Feeling that Overeem has been ramping up his smack talk in order to campaign for another title shot, Cigano replied:

“I knew Velasquez was the contender, but if UFC wanted me to fight Overeem I’d gladly shut him up because he’s been saying a lot of crap, he’s been learning from Chael Sonnen. I’m tired of these guys who think they’re so big, so strong, so bad and that people will get frightened by them because they look bad. There’s no such thing anymore. We’re athletes and the winner will be the one who trains the most. That’s what I have to say about it.”

Dos Santos is slated to face Cain Velasquez in a rematch of their November bout lat year, where dos Santos first won the UFC Heavyweight title on the very first Fox show. Overeem will be suspended until late December, but was still hoping to fight for the title on the UFC's year-end show. However, UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta had earlier squashed those rumors, citing too much red tape to by bypassed before Overeem is even granted the right to fight by the NSAC. Regardless of his ill feelings towards Overeem, JDS feels Velasquez is the rightful competitor, but knows he will have his day against the hulking Overeem:

“I really told Dana White I’d love to fight Overeem. Beating Overeem, actually. That’s what’s going to happen when this bout actually happens. It would be a pleasure. From the way I see it, he didn’t deserve a title shot. Cain deserves it and that’s why we’re fighting. Overeem deserves to a beating and I’m going to arrange that."

Who are you rooting for once these two behemoths finally collide inside the Octagon?

    If JDS vs Overeem happens

it will be the biggest Heavyweight fight in the history of MMA ( Joe Rogans voice) since Fedor vs Cro Cop.

No disrecpect to Cain but he should work his way up

he already has one TKO win lets see him put a few more

before the rematch cuz if he losses again a third chance at the title

will take at least a few years

I think that is 100% true, but then i cant think of many other fighters that deserve a shot at JDS, after all Cain only has one loss - fighters get caught

Dos Santos is very capable of destroying Overeem. Speed, Athleticism and crazy power in either hand. Overeem better be careful of what he is asking for...

and overeem is capable of doing the same to jds. he is the k1 gran prix champion and defenatly the best striker jds has ever fought!! his experience, power, clinchgame with knees and counter striking in a stand up fight is very good.

I'm just still not sure about best striker in MMA. Strikeforce and Brock is pretty much all I've seen from him and Brock gave up as soon as he got kicked in the side. Werdum is not even close to the best striker and we saw how well he did. I think JDS will end his hype train once and for all with a round 1 or 2 KO.

true but the question is did all those roids make reems chin stronger. i remember on inside mma a doctor who knows effects of trt said it increases bone density.all i know isreem was a lot smaller in pride and was KOd several times. i dont know if he was ever caught in k1 or in mma after pride but my guess is jr. will ko him. jr. is alittle faster and ground game is better(trains with nog) but overeem has alil more power, length, and much more use ofkicks/knees

if Andy is the best striker how is it that a guy with

almost No stand up skills out strike him and drop him twice?

there are far better strikers and JDS and Overrem are on the very top

of the list. Just look at Dos Santos record almost every win is by KO

The threat of a takedown. Didn't you watch the rematch, or any other of his destructive wins?

Anderson has 11 UFC title defenses (meaning all top tier competition at 185). He's outstruck the person he's fighting in every one of those fights outside of Sonnen 1, and Lutter as he had little time to work on his feet. That means he's outstruck Belfort, Okami, Franklin, Cote, Maia, and Henderson in title fights. Outside of those title defenses he's outstruck Franklin, Leben, Griffin, Irvin, Rivera, Murray, Stout, and Sakurai. Guy has outstruck orhtodox fighters, lefties, guys with great power, short guys, tall guys, fast guys, long guys, and pretty much everything in between.

We're talking about MMA striking and Schilt was great obviously but I don't think his striking was that great in MMA compared to his K-1.

I also think Silva is the best striker ever in MMA, that's why I said arguably as you could make a case for it.

Then what makes Overeem's striing great in MMA? He's won mainly on the ground in his career outside Duffee, Lesnar, Werdum (if you want to call that a striking display), and a bunch of cans in Japan.

Compare that to JDS and it doesn't compare at all. Hell, compare that to Cormier (who has outstruck Barnett, Big Foot, and Monson recently) and it's not much better.

Also if we're talking the rest of strictly MMA striking there's guys like Nick Diaz, Jose Aldo, Lyoto Machida, and Carlos Condit who have shown far better striking than the Reem. That's not even getting into all-time like Cro Cop, Wanderlei, Liddell, or others.

Reem wont corner and knee JDS, like he said, he has good foot work, fast hands and good power. Reem is toast IMO. Reem's over confidence will be his down fall. I can see him stumbling around now trying not to fall down as JDS unloads to the finish. EVERYTIME Reems has been tagged and hurt, hes quit and been finished.

Overeem doesn't respond very well when hit hard in the face. Don't really blame him, but this fight is very interesting. Reem has kicks and knees that are brutal, I see him utilizing them a lot in this fight. I'm not so sure it's a walk in the park for JDS.

    Almost impossible to predict;

    - A boxer who uses great technique, extreme speed and huge power to KO basically everybody he fights

    - The reigning K-1 WGP champ (biggest achievement in striking) who has 1 strike KO power in both hands, knees and legs. Has perfect technique and also good speed but really stands out for the crushing power he delivers with his strikes.

Both guys always come forward and are really aggressive but JDS loves to throw numerous hand combos while Overeem prefers to pick his shot, trying to take you out with the perfect hit while keeping himself covered.

For me the big X-factor is the chin - Overeem has been suceptible to being stopped via strikes (though hasn't been stopped in a few years) and it is hard to recall JDS ever being rocked.

To be honest the only time anybody knows who has the upper hand in this fight is when one of them gets dropped

Junior's chin has never really been tested because his defense is so good. Eventually someone like Cain or Alistair will get a clean shot in and then we will know. I would guess that JDS's chin is as tough as the rest of him. Ive never seen Overeem KO'd but he has been stunned and finished by tko several times, but only by very high caliber strikers like Liddell, Shogun Hua and Kharuitonov.

It may end up being like the Henderson Shogun fight where neither could finish the other.

@ufcmmafan4life JDS is not the better stand up fighter. Overeem is a world champion in Kickboxing. He is considered a expert in the striking department. As @KiethFarrell mentioned before. Overeem is no doubt the best striker in heavyweight MMA. Overeem may be slower than JDS but I would bet the car that Overeem hits harder than JDS. I honestly dont know who will win this one mainly because either of them could knock one another out with one punch. Its all going to come down to who lands first.

If it stays on its feet JDS will win. He has better boxing, a better chin, better cardio, and just as much power. There's a reason why Overeem tries to take fights to the ground in MMA. He doesn't like having his chin tested.

Winning a K1 GP is a great achievement. However, doing it in a year that didn't have Bonjasky or Hari (while having arguably the easiest track to a K1 title outside of maybe Hunt or Hug back in the day) is also notable.

He may of had a size advantage but he still had to fight Saki, Spong and Aerts who are all at the top of the sport.

As for Hari, even though he wasn't in the tournament Overeem has already KO'd him.

Either way easiest path for the WGP or not... there has only been a hand full of guys (Reem, Hunt and Schilt only ones I'm aware of) who have won the WGP and came to MMA. All of them have proved how devastating their elite of the elite striking is in both sports

Schilt is a far cry from the others though. Shortest tourney total time in history, K1 super HW champion, 4 time K1 tournament champion in absolutely stacked fields. The others are great strikers no doubt, but Schilt is arguable the most accomplished HW kickboxer in history (not just for a mixed martial artist).

Yes, he did KO Hari. But Hari did the same to him in the rematch.

It's not just the guys he fought, as I didn't really mean size. Sponge is a great match up, and he has put on more size ever since. It's the last two opponents. Saki was basically a walk over as his arm was ****ed from his fight against Ghita (which Ghita should have won without an OT period, Saki did enough in the OT period to win). Aerts had basically fought his heart out to beat Schilt, he was done and is horribly outmatched against Overeem anyway.

Had Overeem fought and beat Schilt and/or Ghita in that tourney it would have been much more impressive.

I really hope K1 can make a come back to get some of these guys fighting again. There really are some damn good kickboxers right now, but just too small of a stage. I was hoping "Its Showtime" was gonna take the mantle, but they just don't run enough (or big enough shows) to keep up with everything.

A tourney with Schilt, Hari (with some luck in his legal proceedings as you pointed out), Ghita, Gerges, Spong (if he still wants to compete in kickboxing), and a few up and comers would really be fantastic.

    Some really good arguments here.

For those who haven't yet took the time to train/ fight, a well times and accurate punch utilizing the movement of the entire body requires less power and enables greater speed, enhancing overall movement.

Do not be fooled by size, bigger guys are easier to knock out when you know how to set up, counter and move off the jab... JDS has the technique/ movement... and if he manages it, it will be a masterclass. Alternatively, he will be destroyed by the legs and knees of a person who is half man, and half horse.

After some more thinking and watching Overeem fights I think JDS wins. Alistair's style depends somewhat of the opponent going backwards and retreating, but JDS doesn't do that. Once JDS connects to the chin, and he will, the entire gameplan of countering with kicks and clinching to deliver knees goes out the window. Just my opinion.

Hypothetically speaking if Cain somehow wins the rematch I think Joe Silva has two decisions. Instant rematch rubber match or a number one contender fight with Cigano vs Reem. They'll go with the money so Jds vs Overeem would probably be the decision.

This fight will happen soon.. Awesome fight.. JDS vs Alistair.. Yet it won't be for the title... Cain is winning that belt soon.. No more ring rust, no more coming overweigh, and coming back from surgery... Cain will destroy JDS this time......

The fight between jds and overeem next year will determine who will face Cain for the title shot after he gets the belt back from jds

Cain is still a top notch guy, I wouldn't be looking to fight Overreem when you'll be standing across the octagon who could put you on your back.

you people are dreaming if you think JDS isnt a huge underdog. The Reem will eat him for a snack. He hits way to hard, probably like getting hit by a car going 35 mph. hes bigger stronger more athletic and a more acomplished striker what more evidence does one need.JDS is a scooby snack for the Reem.

I would agree if they fought using boxing gloves so the reem could just stalk jds like some sort of juggernaut covering his face the entire time but unfortunately they won't . JDS' hand are too fast and accurate and with these small gloves overeem wouldnt be able to cover up effectively .

Reem got lucky in K1 with the caliber of opponents he had, not to mention K1's reigning champ is getting over the hill (sami). Reems striking vs Werdum was incredibly sloppy, he gassed after round 1, and couldn't put away a guy Arlovski beat handedly. Overreem is Overhyped in my opinion. He'll get smashed by Cain or JDS. Overreem vs Carwin would be a better match then fighting either of the smaller opponents.

Lol... Overeem will crush Dos Santos.

I know he's the champ and all and got

to stand his ground but he's getting way

    ahead of himself here.... !!
