Jones vs. Gustafsson II Possible For Sweden, ‘Bones’ Doesn’t Want To Talk About It

With Jon Jones’ convincing UFC 172 victory over Glover Teixeira in the books, the focus shifts to the next contender to ‘Bones’’ long held title. Alexander Gustafsson is clearly the only man for the job, and UFC prez Dana White confirmed that ‘The Mauler’ will get the next crack at the belt. While talking at the UFC 172 post fight presser, DW also revealed that the rematch could well be in Gus’ back yard.

Check out what the baldfather had to say on the situation:

“Gustafsson gets the next fight with Jones, I don’t know, physically, how Jones is right now. He just went five rounds with a guy that hits hard, he looked good, but we’ll see how he feels. We’ve got to take the fight wherever the fight will do best; this thing could do 50 or 60000 if we do it in Europe we’ll do the rematch (in a stadium)”

So with the rematch looking like it will go down on Gustafsson’s home soil, that will factor in tothe inevitable build-up of pre-fight tension between the two. When questioned on the first fight and the rematch with ‘The Mauler’, Jones said the following:

“I don’t really want to talk about that kid, at all. I’m not going to talk about him at all, I just won a fight and I’m having a good time. I feel like I won the fight fair and square.”

Jones proved that he is too much for a heavy-hitting underdog from Brazil, but the questions still remain from the first fight with Gustafsson. In my books, Gus should have had the immediate rematch; the title fight the two took part in at UFC 165 was as exciting as it was close. Why the UFC decided to have Gustafsson fight ‘Poster Boy’ I’ll never know.

Jones has shown that he is light years ahead of the competition at 205 pounds, but he edged past Gus at best. That’s my opinion, and clearly ‘The Mauler’ has the tools to give Jones a decent challenge, at the least. Will fighting in front of his home crowd give Gus the extra boost that pushes him to championship status?
