Jones-Silva, Cain-JDS III Rumored for Fall Event at Cowboys Stadium

Amidst all the rumors circulating the MMA world, one has surfaced that every fan hopes actually comes true. The UFC is rumored to be putting together a fall event that would blow the roof off of Cowboys Stadium. The Texas landmark was rumored to be home to the ill-fated Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar bout which never came to fruition, but now it could be home to an entirely new mega-card.

Nothing is confirmed of course, but the UFC is reportedly looking to set up a fall event that features Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones AND Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos III. Interestingly enough, this fall will mark the 20th anniversary of the UFC. The rumor was reported by Dave Meltzer (transcribed by Bloody Elbow), who had this to say:

There is an idea floating around to try and put on the biggest show in company history at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas this fall. The idea would be to have Silva vs. Jon Jones and Velasquez vs. Dos Santos at the stadium, in October, at the same time as the state fair of Texas, perhaps on 10/12 or 10/19. That much is known to be at least something talked about. With Madison Square Garden seeming more and more unlikely for November, this show could be billed as UFC 20th anniversary show, with the idea of trying to repeat the success of UFC 100.

Wow. An event of this magnitude would no doubt be close to the buzz of the epic UFC 100. In fact, on paper, the event might be better in terms of talent. It may not sell as many PPV buys as the Lesnar-headed 100 card, but it could potentially be two of the highest grade matchups we’ve ever seen in the Octagon, at least on paper.

There is a ton of red tape that has to be surpassed for this event to take place, but here’s to hoping it goes off without a hitch. I think it’s probably a longshot at this point, but if it were to happen, many fans’ wishes would come true (including mine). The window of opportunity for making a Silva/Jones superfight is closing, so pairing it with the Cain/JDS trilogy bout at a major stadium would be an MMA smorgasbord unlikely to be duplicated.
