Jon Jones aiming to be Heavyweight champion, but only when the time is right

19

UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones has looked to be the definition of dominant recently, smashing former 205 lb. champions with seemingly relative ease. Because of this, the MMA community fully expects him to one day move up in weight and challenge for the Heavyweight belt. Champion Junior dos Santos has recently stated his respect for Jones, but notes that he is the ‘baddest man on the planet’ and would face Jones should the opportunity arise. Jones himself spoke last week of making the trek to Heavyweight in 2013 after his bout with Chael Sonnen. Speaking to USA Today this week, Jones continued on about the subject:

“Because things have been going so well, right now it’s about not putting limits on anything and realizing the sky is the limit. Really, I want everything, and I’ve said that since day one. I want to be the best. I want to be a record-holder in everything. I want to be a heavyweight champion and a light-heavyweight champion. I want it all.”

So Jones states his sky-high ambitions clearly and looks to own both of the top weight titles at once. Should he accomplish that task, it would be very hard not to rank him at the top of greatest MMA fighters all-time. Anderson Silva is dominant, but if Jones rises to the top of the Heavyweight division, the talent he will have crushed will be simply too much to deny, especially coupled with the murderer’s row he has dispatched at Light Heavyweight. Jon Jones realizes there are some incredibly talented fighters in the UFC at 265, and would need to plan accordingly:

“I respect the champions and the top-ranked guys in the heavyweight division,” I realize that me, at my current size, the odds would be majorly against me, so it would be about doing it right, doing it with a lot of passion, and having fun with the game. I’ll do it right when that time comes, I’ll give it my all, and I’ll expect to be a winner.”

Jon Jones has astronomical goals for the rest of his UFC career, but at the pace he has been maintaining, anything is possible. Will Bones one day become the Heavyweight champ?

Wow, i think Jones can be heavyweight champ, but not at this age he needs more weight in about 2 or 3 years he would be thick enough but right now pat barrys leg kick would snap those skinny calfs, frank mir would have ripped his arm out the socket if he had that armbar middleweight Vitor belfort had, and dos santos would absolutely nutralize his wrestling and everything else along with reach… but in 2 or 3 years definately.

Good analysis. It’s scary to think how good Bones can become. Right now, I see JDS and Cain being pretty much the only guys that could beat Jones, with Anderson Silva providing a good match (but maybe knocking him out).

When the timing is right – after JDS is killed by a bus. Kidding aside if he puts on 5-10 pounds of muscle a year, in a few years he’ll be ready. No rush.

Yes it sure is, but i beleive he has the skill set to one day become champion, just not now while his weight is down.once he gets his natural weight it will be better for him to move up.Thats why theres divisions and jones is lucky enough to make 205 if it were 198 he may have started out at heavyweight and not been the “Dominating” force in the octagon we all know.

“I want everything, and I’ve said that since day one. I want to be the best. I want to be a record-holder in everything. I want to be a heavyweight champion and a light-heavyweight champion. I want it all.” Who the fvck talks like that? This is why people don’t like Jones, he’s got to learn some humility and keep his ego in check or otherwise the fall will be hard.

I mean, this is not candy we talking about, am I right? Boom. Double shot.

What’s gonna happen to Jones in 3 years?… do tell!

I hope he steps up soon so we can watch JDS, Cain, and Cormier crush him.

    I wish there was a 220lb division.

DC, homie. Cormier. Hope those kidneys hold up…

It sounds like the mind set of a winner, someone who does not satisfied being average.

Exactly David, he just has to be careful not to take it too far. It can get lonely at the top.

Dont rush it Jones, continue tearing it up in LHW for a while before moving up. Its not just an extra 15 pounds at heavyweight after all so dont go fighting guys 50lbs more than you just cause.

I’d put Overeem in that mix too, maybe even Werdum would have a good shot

People loved when Vera had the balls to say it, difference is he could never follow up.
On the other hand, Jones has that chance.

People for some reason can’t stand greatness, it’s the same with Silva, GSP, LeBron James and others

  • http://lowkickmma.com/author/mindkontrolle mindkontrolle

Yes, that’s the obvious answer David, but if that’s the definition of a winner then it is the polar opposite of champions like Fedor, Edgar, GSP, even Silva. I’m not impressed by this kid-in-a-candy-store talk. I guess you are though, that’s cool.

Believe me this is Jones at his prime. HW division is not for him!!!!! I remember when Cro Cop was at his prime he was 90-90kg. He became a punching bag when he moved to 105-110kg.
