Jon Jones aiming to be Heavyweight champion, but only when the time is right

UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones has looked to be the definition of dominant recently, smashing former 205 lb. champions with seemingly relative ease. Because of this, the MMA community fully expects him to one day move up in weight and challenge for the Heavyweight belt. Champion Junior dos Santos has recently stated his respect for Jones, but notes that he is the ‘baddest man on the planet’ and would face Jones should the opportunity arise. Jones himself spoke last week of making the trek to Heavyweight in 2013 after his bout with Chael Sonnen. Speaking to USA Today this week, Jones continued on about the subject:

“Because things have been going so well, right now it’s about not putting limits on anything and realizing the sky is the limit. Really, I want everything, and I’ve said that since day one. I want to be the best. I want to be a record-holder in everything. I want to be a heavyweight champion and a light-heavyweight champion. I want it all.”

So Jones states his sky-high ambitions clearly and looks to own both of the top weight titles at once. Should he accomplish that task, it would be very hard not to rank him at the top of greatest MMA fighters all-time. Anderson Silva is dominant, but if Jones rises to the top of the Heavyweight division, the talent he will have crushed will be simply too much to deny, especially coupled with the murderer’s row he has dispatched at Light Heavyweight. Jon Jones realizes there are some incredibly talented fighters in the UFC at 265, and would need to plan accordingly:

“I respect the champions and the top-ranked guys in the heavyweight division,” I realize that me, at my current size, the odds would be majorly against me, so it would be about doing it right, doing it with a lot of passion, and having fun with the game. I’ll do it right when that time comes, I’ll give it my all, and I’ll expect to be a winner.”

Jon Jones has astronomical goals for the rest of his UFC career, but at the pace he has been maintaining, anything is possible. Will Bones one day become the Heavyweight champ?
