Earlier this week it was announced that UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre would be holding a press conference in Quebec City, Canada, today to discuss his future. While many were quick to speculate that it would indeed feature GSP’s retirement speech, UFC president Dana White was quick to speak up and say that the announcement would be “nothing crazy.”

However, the UFC announced last night that they would be holding a “special media conference call” at 2:20 PM EST to coincide with GSP’s announcement. Ariel Helwani described the scene on Twitter:

The fact that White and the UFC are stepping in to join St. Pierre at a media event that was supposed to be an innocuous appearance at a shopping mall tells me that something more serious is definitely going on behind the scenes. When Helwani questioned White about the exact nature of the call, the president came back with this:

Interesting. It goes without saying that whatever is about to be announced will be something people will want to hear. At this point I can’t think of it being anything other than St. Pierre’s retirement announcement, but who knows?

St. Pierre has been put through a media circus after he stated he would be taking some time off from MMA after winning a very controversial split decision over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167.

It’s a whole lot of fanfare for something as simple as saying he’ll be back within a few months. Either way, if GSP retires he’ll leave the sport as one of the best fighters to ever step inside the Octagon. We’ll keep you updated on whatever transpires rom the conference and the call.

Have we seen the last of Georges St. Pierre?
