GSP’s Mentor Calls For The Champ’s Retirement

Johny Hendricks fought the best fight possible at UFC 167, but came off on the wrong side of the judges’ scorecards. The split decision has been the source of much debate in the time since, and UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre faces an uncertain future in the sport.

With talk of retirement, or at least some time away from the sport, it seems that we could even be looking at an interim title bout at 170; something that seems a little unfair for Hendricks in my opinion. The judges decision is final though, so ‘Bigg Rigg’ will have to take what he is given at this stage.

With St-Pierre not letting the cat out of the bag regarding his future in the sport, all we can do is speculate on what the future holds. GSP’s mentor has his own opinion on the matter, and actually agrees with Hendricks, in a way. Check out what Kristof Midoux said to Journaldemontreal.com:

“I think Georges will abandon his belt and there will be a world championship without him. The decision is up to him and I expect him to come back from vacation to sit and talk with him,” he said. “But he is aware that he needs to rest. It must leave room for anything else in his heart.”

“I think he made ??the biggest career in this sport, but if he decides to return, for any reason, I will not be in his corner. I do not want to see him suffer more, having accomplished what all dream to accomplish,” he said. He has another life awaits. I think he has many other things to do, instead of trying to find out who is the strongest in the world, because he has proved that it was him.”

I think that we may have seen the last bout of GSP’s storied career, but I would be sad to admit that it was a BS decision that ‘Rush’ goes out on. Whatever the case, it is true that St-Pierre has helped the sport immensely.

At the least I’d like to see GSP vs. Hendricks II, but if the champ is done with the sport what would it prove? Motivation and mental preparation is key in this sport, and if St-Pierre is lacking, he could take some seriously unnecessary punishment.
