Georges St-Pierre On UFC Return: I Have To Keep Some Secrets

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been very vocal since he stepped away from the sport of MMA; the estranged French-Canadian superstar has been very critical of the promotion, and has mainly aimed his tirades at the UFC’s drug testing policies.

The length of GSP’s hiatus from the sport is yet to be revealed and the media storm surrounding his former employers grows more with the criticism from ‘Rush’. Speaking recently with MMAFighting, St-Pierre seems to have changed his tune a little:

“UFC has been great to me. I always be proud to be with UFC, they make me who I am. If I’m wealthy right now it’s because of UFC. I would not be where I am in my life without UFC. It’s never to put down UFC that I’ve [criticized drug testing], it’s to help the sport. Because of the UFC I am very wealthy now. Very wealthy.”

“They give me the life, the exposure that I have, the sponsorship and everything. If I ever come back it’s for the love of the sport. If I come back things would have to change a little bit, otherwise I’m not interested to come back. Right now I’m glad to see things headed in the right direction… Who knows, in a few times maybe I’ll be bored and come back.”

The UFC has certainly aided massively in GSP’s growth as a star in MMA, but I’ve always wondered whether the UFC would have got to where they are without ‘Rush’. Truthfully, they probably would have. St-Pierre then turned his attention to the reasons behind his vacation of the UFC title which he held for so long:

“I still train everyday, every single day. I feel healthier than I ever felt before. The stress of competing was eating me alive. (as far as my return) It could be a yes or no, I can’t tell you everything. I have to have some secrets.”

These comments are really the first, since leaving the UFC, that indicate GSP could well be planning his return already. If ‘Rush’ was a huge draw for the UFC before he vacated the belt, I can’t imagine the size of the stadium that he could fill with a future return from semi-retirement.

GSP then spoke about the upcoming title fight between Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler at UFC 171:

“If I had to bet, I would think Johny Hendricks would win. They both have knockout power, but I think Hendricks has the advantage in the grappling.”
