Fighters react on Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman failing UFC 153 drug tests
Posted on November 4, 2012, 05:12 PM by Anton GurevichStephan Bonnar and Dave Herman "got caught" by Ultimate Fighting Championship post-fight drug test, going positive on anabolic steroids (Bonnar) and Cannabis (Herman).
Bonnar is now officially retired from professional MMA competition, while Daver Herman will have to wait for his fate in the UFC. Herman is currently on a three-fight losing streak, which makes it quite unlikely that he will get another chance inside the Octagon.
Ultimate Fighting Championship released the following statement in regards to UFC 153 failed drug tests (via MMAJunkie.com):
"The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents," the statement read. "Both fighters have admitted taking the banned substances and have orally agreed to suspensions. Once the suspensions have been reduced to written agreements, the results of their tests and the agreed-upon suspensions will be sent to the Association of Boxing Commissions official record-keeper so other jurisdictions will be on notice."
Meanwhile, MMA fighters present at World Series of Fighting event shared their thoughts about the incident. Most of the fighters agree that Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug, and are not surprised by Bonnar testing positive for anabolic steroids. Interestingly enough, Eddie Alvarez refused to criticize anyone for using steroids or PED's, claiming that sometimes there's too much pressure on fighters to perform.

Some of these fighters have grey answers but in truth it's black and white. When it comes to rules, you must follow them whether or not you agree if you want to be part of who sets them.
If you want to fight, don't take banned substances such as roids or weed.
If you want to juice or smoke the green, don't fight.
It's as simple as that, if someone doesn't agree with it then go to the AC or take them to court, don't say it's unfair or BS once someone is caught.
The rules are black and white, their opinions aren't.
I for one, want to hear how the fighters feel. As next to medical professionals, they are the only opinions that really matter on the issue.
If you don't want to know their opinions.... don't hit play.
Guest For someone who trains regularly but more as a hobby I can half grasp the idea of how much it really takes to be at THAT level, the amount of work you have to put in is immense.
Anybody can understand how some fighters just can't naturally reach that level but under pressure to perform they resort to PEDs to try to keep up.
Are PEDs cheating? For sure, no discussion needed.
What is considered a PED? Rules need to be re-evaluated.
I agree rules need to be reevaluated that's what I'm saying, but until someone steps up to try and get them changed they have to go by the book and if they don't, well don't try to say you broke the rules because you have different feelings on the matter.
If you sign up to a certain set of rules, play by them.
If you want to get them hanged that's fine but until then you know what's allowed and what isn't
You are right Keith, rules are rules but when so many fighters are having difficulties following the rules there has to be a big gap for improvement.
The fighters don't have to fully comply to the set of rules, they are not slaves after all, show discontent and the company should adapt.
How did anyone weak this? are you people that retarded?
I weaked myself to see if i can get one of those little flames.....those are cool.
Hahha i now realize i could have sharped me and get the same effect.
Somehow I doubt that ;-)
To get a flame Brasil just leave a comment saying Brock Lesnar would destroy Fedor.
Brock Lesnar will destroy Fedor! Lol
Hahahaahh.... Awesome, it worked!
My 2 Cents:
I see a world of difference between pot and steroids. First, if I were Stephan Bonnar I'd be ashamed of myself. If I were Dana White I'd be furious. Could you just imagine in some polar universe, that Bonnar had pulled off a win, only to have it reversed or considered a no-contest, because of Bonnar's use of PEDs? If there is one reason to stamp out steroids in this sport it is for that reason. What is the purpose of having a card if the results aren't certified until a drug test has been passed...post fight? How would you like to be the poor slob who loses a bet on a fight, where the fight is over turned a week later? On this issue it would be nice if the professional betting establishments would make themselves heard. The sport and the betting line need assurance that the results from the fights stand. Dana needs to nip this in the bud and this is the second time in five of Anderson's championship defenses, where this has been an issue. It's just unacceptable.
Weed - I wonder, for example, how many people who are judging Nick Diaz, Dave Herman, Matt Riddle as bad people for smoking pot or sit in Federal or State legislatures or on various police agencies, judgeship's or prosecutors who "used" to smoke pot? My guess is it would be significant to the point of being the majority. On this issue I see a great deal of hypocrisy.
In terms of pot vs steroids as a performance enhancer, there is no comparison. The communist block, for example, didn't spend decades of money, research and training, sending their athletes to the Olympics on weed.
In terms of weed and whatever social negatives people think it might have, one has to wonder what TUF would be like if they got rid of the booze and replaced it with weed. Because to be honest, I'm tired of the getting loaded "scene" that happens every season. It's as if it's scripted. Fill the house with booze, give them nothing to do and turn the cameras on. It's all rather boring and cliche and gives the sport a bad image - IMO.
ed soares is a ****

As someone who also comes from the Netherlands, I can confirm that Marijuana is not a performance enhancer :)
I agree. Rampage actually brought up some valid points. It's definitely not a performance enhancer, but a performance inhibitor, and I feel it should not be banned, but the athletic commissions have their hands tied on this one, at least in the U.S. Being that it is illegal, they can't allow it. Even in states where it is currently allowed as a medicine, they still can't allow it, for the same reason they can't allow drugs like hydrocodone even with a prescription: it's still a controlled substance. I don't agree with it, but because of wonderful politics, that's just how it has to be until the laws are changed.
Is that why your so damn tall :-)
Great move Bonnar.....
Now you're in line for another crack at Silva - lose again and a shot at Jones. Just make sure your smack talk is up to scratch.
How ****ing hard is it to follow the rules of the sport? I have lived 29 years without taking steroids it really is not that difficult.
