Fedor Emelianenko vs. Bigfoot Silva set for Feb. 12th; Strikeforce make Heavyweight Tournament Official

Well, it looks like the wait for return of “The Last Emperor” is finally over. Sherdog reported first this evening, that Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will meet at Strikeforce’s February 12th event, as a part of promotion’s rumored eight-man Heavyweight Tournament. Here’s the report:

Fedor Emelianenko will return to the Strikeforce cage on Feb. 12, as he takes on Antonio Silva in a heavyweight main event from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Sources close to the negotiations informed Sherdog.com Sunday evening of the event’s date and location.

A match between former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett is also said to be in the works for the February date.

Meanwhile, Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting.com reports that the fight is yet to be signed, but there’s definitely something to hope for:

A source in Emelianenko’s camp told MMA Fighting that it was likely that Emelianenko’s participation on the card would require that the deal be done by the end of this week, and that the two sides had several outstanding issues to deal with.

A source in Silva’s camp said he has already agreed to face Emelianenko.

Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz said simply, “Nothing confirmed yet.”

In his last fight, Antonio Silva defeated Mike Kyle via an impressive second round KO at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II event on Dec. 4th. Silva’s last defeat was against Fabricio Werdum (Unanimous Decision), a man who did the unbelievable by submitting Fedor Emelianenko after just 69 seconds. Fabricio Werdum was Fedor’s only fight in 2010.

Here’s the official statement from Strikeforce (via MixFight.ru):

NEW YORK (Jan. 4, 2011) – World championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotions STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL, in association with premium television network SHOWTIME have signed a new, multi-year agreement to co-promote events headlined by the MMA legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-2, 1 NC).

In addition, STRIKEFORCE has assembled eight of the world’s top ranked heavyweights to compete in the STRIKEFORCE World Grand Prix – Heavyweight Tournament, a three-stage, single-elimination tournament that will take place over several events in 2011.  The first two quarterfinal fights begin on Saturday, Feb. 12, live on SHOWTIME from the IZOD Center in E. Rutherford, N.J. In the main event, the 34-year-old Emelianenko will face the towering Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (15-2) in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL co-promoted event.  Co-featured on Feb. 12, former world champion Andrei Arlovski (15-8) will face Sergei Kharitonov (16-4), the last man to defeat current STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight World Champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem.

“We are thrilled to have come to a long-term agreement with Fedor and M-1 GLOBAL,” said STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker. “To have the greatest MMA fighter of all-time put his legacy on the line in a single-elimination tournament will truly captivate MMA fans worldwide. STRIKEFORCE is home to the best heavyweight division in the world; the athlete who runs the gauntlet in a tournament such as this would have to be considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world.”

“I’m very pleased to be working with SHOWTIME and STRIKEFORCE and Mr. Coker and Mr. Hershman personally. Thanks to their interest and efforts, we’ve created what will go down in history as MMA’s greatest heavyweight tournament of all time,” said Vadim Finkelchtein, co-founder of M-1 Global. “M-1, STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME have built a partnership committed to the future growth of MMA—a sport where organizations represent a working collaborative that enable the best fighters in the world to fight each other. This agreement benefits everyone, especially the fans who’ll see Fedor in action more often.

“I can’t think of a better way to start 2011 than with this major announcement,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®. “Fedor is universally known to sports fans throughout the world and it is an honor to continue our work with M-1 GLOBAL and STRIKEFORCE in presenting this legendary fighter to SHOWTIME subscribers.

“I have been training very hard since my last fight and can’t wait to get back in the cage,” said the 6-foot, 235-pound Emelianenko, who hails from Stary Oskol, Russia and is promoted by M-1 GLOBAL.  “STRIKEFORCE has assembled a roster filled with the best heavyweights in the world and, together with M-1 GLOBAL, we have the opportunity to fight the best in a great tournament format.”

  • Would rather see Fedor fighting Barnett but at least he’s finally fighting. First round KO for Fedor then hopefully Overeem is next for him.

  • And he;s almost in the UFC too im sure

  • I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • “and that the two sides had several outstanding issues to deal with.”

    translation= $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  • amen to that, i don’t believe a thing m1 says until the contract is signed and fedor is in the cage

  • Translation=zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

It takes Fedor soooo long to be involved in anything other than discussion and negotiation it seems…then it happens and its still not relevant.

  • The best P4P fighter in the whole wide world………….fo sho!

  • 2007 called, they want their rankings back

  • What about the jabs??

  • “A match between former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett is also said to be in the works for the February date.”
I heard it will be arlovski vs kharitonov

  • Can’t wait 😀

  • You forgot something…..It’s the most powerful jabs in the history of boxing…sorry I meant MMA…haha

  • I’ll believe this once I see Fedor walking towards the SF cage

  • Who did not see this coming??? Fedor by round1 KO

  • No respect f

  • No Respect for Fedor until he fights Overeem, Velasquez, or Werdum.

  • BigWho? Even if he beats em what does that say?

He needs to fight Overeem for sure.

  • I’ll take Bigfoot….

  • Fedor by Knocking and Killing Big Foot in Round 1!!!
prepare to see an angry Fedor!
    The Last Emperor is Back!

  • Fedor by irrelevance.

Discussion regarding negotiation to undertake the possibility of comprehending/contemplating the long decision as to whether or not to be ambiguously seeking the deliberate attempt at the meaningless heavyweight title is set to begin in 2015…maybe.

  • Great match up. Looking Foward to it.

  • im just happy to see fedor fight! its been forever jesus, i bet fedor is too much for silva..

  • Fedor for the win!!!

  • Yes Phil Baroni!

  • No respect for you until you fight at all.

  • Fedor thread. Start hating everyone! And start loving everyone.

  • No doubt Japegro

  • In New Jersey? I will be there to see Fedor! That is ****in awesome!!!!!

  • Oh quit hating you Lashly lickin Irrelevant spotter. Irrelevant is starting with your profile pic and go from there to every one of your posts.

  • Yea Bobby Lashley is the man huh?

  • No Respect for you until You Shut Your Stupid Mouth!!!!!!!

  • sf heavyweight tourney would be sick. some awesome match ups in that

  • I dont even know what im looking at in your profile pic, but i have the good sense not to whine about it like it matters.

  • Great matchup?!?!?

  • Well about time he is fighting again…this might be the fight to show us that he is WASHED UP! or this might be the fight to SHUT SOME PEOPLE UP! lets see cant wait…

  • I am with you bro…lots of stupid people here…lol

  • ::SIGH:: now i just need to subscribe to showtime

  • Hey man long time. Just curious for your reason on picking BIGFOOT over Fedor?

  • @MrWhiskeyShits…wats wrong wit u?? why r u posting Baroni hl on like every single thread n like 4-5 times on the same thread??

  • i hope that the tournament will happen… but im not sure that scott coker will get fedor to fight 3 times in a year, if he wins the fights… anyways it would be really cool…
    Fedor vs Silva
    Barnett vs Arlovski
    Werdum vs Rogers
    Overeem vs Kharitonov!

  • coker needs to start putting these big fights together now. He has the heavyweights but is not using them, fedor hardly fights, overeem hardly fights, we havent seen barnett fight or kharitonov fight yet.

  • I’m just happy to watch Fedor fight. I hope that Fedor is pissed off and motivated cause i want to see Fedor at his best like back in the good old days where being dropped on his head he is still able to get a win.

But I’m with a lot of people here I will believe it when i see Fedor touching gloves with Silva..

  • 2 solid match ups.
Not saying he’ll win, but i’m done underestimating Bigfoot.
Now we can see if Fedor can recapture some of that aura he had.

  • Big Foot is a top 10 HW.

  • I don’t see Big Foot winning but I think he will do better that a lot of people here think. He has a slight chance on the ground but I think Fedor will get a 2nd or 3rd RD KO or gnp him to a decision.

  • Yeah, great match up. It is Fedor V a top ten HW. How is that not a great matchup? Fedor is coming off of a loss. He does not deserve a title shot so any top ten opponent is legit AND a great match up.

  • I’d rather see Werdum V Overeem and Rogers V Kharitonov.

  • Fedor will walk right through Bigfoot. Pretty pathetic that they can’t make the Overeeem/Fedor fight happen, and now, not later. They are just dragging this thing out for more money and promotion, and nobody wins.

  • Fedor just lost to Werdum. Why should he get to fight the champ?

  • i think its Arlovski vs Kharitonov now, so i guess it will be Overeem vs Barnett in the 1st round.

  • That’s a good fight but it still sucks. Werdum beat Fedor so he really should get the title shot he was promised before the fight.

  • This heavyweight torney looks awesome

  • That’s awesome. It is only 1 month away. I hope that SF will make all those HW fight in 2011. It is SF chance to get over the UFC, since the UFC has problems with HWs.
Stop complaining about Fedor vs Big Foot, I still take and watch it. Big Foot is dangerous. After Big Foot, Werdum rematch and the final, Overeem.

  • If you don’t like it, watch Dos Santos vs ???????

  • I take Fedor

  • Youve been whining since you entered this thread to hate on Fedor you moron

  • Also if your that curious click the profile and look, thats right, youve been here a long time and still too stupid to know that

  • I’m not curious at all because you’re not interesting enough. You need a hit on your page that badly princess? Also, MANY MANY people notice Fedor fights irrelevant opponents and it takes forever to make the match.

You probably have bigfoot in the top 10 just because of this match.

  • lol
they have answered your wishes! 🙂
    its like this now:
    Fedor vs. Big Foot
    Overeem vs. Werdum
    Arlovski vs. Kharitonov
    Rogers vs. Barnett

  • If it happens it will take a lot of atention of a ufc hw division… with cain, carwin and big nog injured, lesnar who is quiting, nelson with contract issues…

  • Expected Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal match-ups:

-Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva
    -Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov
    -Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum
    -Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers

  • Its about time coker started making these big fights happen, he has the heavyweights at strikeforce but is not using them, fedor hardly fights, overeem hardly fights, he hasnt even used barnett or Kharitonov yet.

  • yeah what he said. I actually will not be suprised of big foot wins. He is alot better than people on here give him credit for.

  • Lol, I was just playin really… At first thought I have to go with Fedor, but u never know what I will decide in the end. Just be sure to catch the staff predictions… By then I have analyzed it a bit more.

  • Lol, I just felt like saying it because these are the same reactions that were posted upon hearing news of Fedor vs. Werdum.

  • lol night monkey go watch the 32 fedor fights and see if your 1/2 as humble a fedor after seeing his fights for the first time 😛 fedor is super respectful, and to be honest i doupt fedor is saying i dont wana fight reem or werdum, its his managment either trying to wait for big fights or they are trying to protect his record so they can promote him more…

  • and cain is in the ufc sooo…

  • That was weak……..same as your mind

  • By the way….your so interesting that in the 3 years youve trolled here you only had 1300 profile views lmao, your a fool. Talk more Ill prove it

  • As good a matchup as your face to my butt!!!

  • clearly you know nothing about fedor if you have no respect for a guy cos he lost to werdum. its about his career not 1 fight.

  • -Fedor

    Than hopefully Semi’s will be:
    Fedor v Barnett
Overeem v Kharitonov (Overeem gets a chance to avenge his last lose)

    Fedor v Overeem 😀

  • I have always thought highly of Silva, but I think Fedor is a bad matchup for him. Silva has good technical boxing, decent power and decent speed, and I think he would do great against guys like Dos Santos and Mir who would want to make it a boxing/striking match, but Fedors speed advantage, exposiveness and awkward style will throw him off and I think it could go like the MIke Kyle fight, except Fedor should finish the job. On the other side of the coin tho if it goes to the ground I think Silva will avoid getting submitted and use his freak size and grip to control Fedor.

  • yeah its OFFICIAL!!….i think.

  • rumor is if fedor beats silvia his next fight is againist dana white in semi-finals. My pick is Dana white winning it in the first round with a flying arm bar

  • I’m in love with the idea of this tourney 😀

  • They should have the 3 stage tournament within a 2 month period so I can get my dose of Fedor (assuming he makes it to the end)

  • Best Christmas gift i’ve received so far. Super excited.

  • why has reem even agreed to this, he’s practically vacated his belt for a chance to win it back, tournament format should be for an open spot.. not just to reset all the rankings ‘cos you ****ed up and can’t make your contender fight your champ

  • Fedor wins in less then 2 minutes of the first round….

  • Good luck Fedor. I’m always rooting for you.

  • Now that is what I am talking about. I hope Arlovski comes in with his head on right. If he doesn’t Kharitonov will knock it off! I think Rogers is going to spend the fight on his back.

  • If Overeem beats Werdum, Fedor won’t get to rematch Werdum until after the tourni.

  • That’s what I see happening too. That said, if Overeem ends up on the ground with Werdum it could go a lot differently.

  • I agree except that if it goes to the ground I think that it will look like a replay of Fedor V Big Nog. Antonio Silva and Noguiera are very similar fighters.

  • The only thing that sucks about Fedor fighting in a tourni is that after he shatters his hand on Big Foot’s freakishly big jaw, he will have to pull out. 🙁 I really hope he doesn’t use any casting punches. If you have ever wondered why Fedor breaks his hand so often just throw a casting punch at a heavy bag.

  • Because he is confident that he will prevail.

  • I can see it coming phase II will be the finale on PPV

  • your the same person who thinks its stupid the brett got to fight overeem for the belt right? idiot.

  • …I havent been here 3 years you idiot..stop talking about peoples profile pics Atleast TRY to stay ontopic.

Somebody delete these comments and ban this fool if he keeps following me around every thread to cry about my avatar.

  • this is going to be a great event. it brings back the big names of the heavyweight division to solidify who is the best fighter in the world. some will still believe the best fighter in the world is in the ufc, but if dana white would make that same bet he made with the pride owners, we could see the fighter he believes in most to enter a tournament like this. he won’t though and this will prove that strikeforce is more of a threat to the ufc than you may think. this tournament will give all these fighters exposure to the american crowd and set up great matchups much like pride. go fedor.

  • this is th

  • I’m assuming this is a different then a heavyweight belt. The winner could be the GrandPrix Heavyweight holder and still a heavyweight. Very much like pride used to do, or similar. Mr.Coker is missing the pride days.

  • ^heavyweight champion. sorry.

  • Info: In the next couple of days Gegard Mousasi and some famous trainers from Ernesto Hoost’s gym in Holland are flying to meet with Fedor in Russia to join his training camp and one of the sparring partners that is coming is 122 kilograms, which is just like Silva
Fedor has already completed his 2nd training camp which is high-altitude training in the mountains of Russia

  • No respect for fedor, another ufc fan that has only been watching the sport for about 2 weeks.

  • Overeem has won the K1 grand prix and just annihilated duffee a month later. Strikeforce is not like the UFC where they own fighters to fight only in Strikeforce.

  • Just weaked myself. They set it up for Fedor to fight the winner of Werdum V Overeem IF he beats Silva.

  • I see we have a lot of Fedor ****danglers hanging from Fedor’s nuts again. The only reason I don’t respect Fedor is because he should be fighting the top competition to prove himself as the best fighter in the world.

If he actually goes through with this whole Strikeforce tournament, I will regain respect for him. Even if he loses, at least he showed that he was willing to test himself.
