Fabricio Werdum went 2-0 in his second coming to the UFC, this time defeating Mike Russow via TKO in Round 1. Werdum snapped Russow's 11-fight win streak (4-0 in the UFC) to cement his place in the mix for a shot at the UFC Heavyweight title. In his next fight, Werdum is most likely to find himself in the cage against top 5 contender, fighting for the #1 contender spot.

I think we need to start giving some credit to Werdum's striking, and consider him a top HW and stop making excuses, fact he out struck alistar, spin it what ever way you want, Reem was worried about the takedown, he had a hurt toe, blah, blah. hey destroyed iron chin nelson, and now he ran through Russow, who has an Iron chin as well, he is top 5 for sure, he already beat big foot, he was the first man to beat Fedor. He has the best BJJ credentials of all the HW, so he got caught by JDS who hasnt, it happens to the best guys out there. Werdum is back and he should be next in line for that title shot. Of course Cain will more than likely get the shot, but Werdum should have a top opponent while he is waiting.

I agree with everything you said except the assertion that he out struck Overeem. He was just busier. That is not the same thing.

I gave Werdum props on striking after the Roy Nelson fight. I remember seeing his Muay Thai and just thinking that is not the same fighter he was two years ago. Very impressive.

You have a fair point Choke, but i counter with, just say this out loud, a BJJ specialist landed more strikes, on the current K1 champ. the striking should of never even been that close.

Most definitely. That said I think that Werdum has been flying under the radar for years.

No, he didn't. The vast majority of the punches he threw in that fight landed on Overeem's hands and forearms. He was busier that Overeem. That is not the same as outstriking.

Anton and David are right on this one...Originally I thought Allistair had outstriked werdum but was wrong.

.According to the fightmetric official number crunchers, Werdum landed 62 total strikes to Overeem’s 46. The submission specialist also connected on 43 total significant strikes, while “The Demolition Man” only scored 32 times.

Anyway for a slice of my humble pie ?

People really need to stop quoting and paying attention to fightmetric. It is a flawed program and if you watch the fights and count punches landed versus punches thrown that miss or get deflected you will see that.

Werdum may have landed more strikes than Alistair, but Overeem's strikes carried far more power. Overeem's "significant strikes" were several times more "significant" than Werdum's. Every time Overeem threw a combination, Werdum flopped to his back. In MMA, you don't lose any points for flopping on your back.

However, if you scored that fight as a kick boxing bout (which is all it amounted to), you would have to either count Werdum's flops as knock downs, or start deducting points for evading the fight. Since he did it at least 5 times in every round, you would have some ridiculous score...like 30-15 for Overeem.

The bottom line is Overeem was throwing to finish, and Werdum was throwing only to score points. Because of that, no matter what the stats say, I have a hard time agreeing that Werdum outstruck Overeem.

I think if we was really out striking lord overoid then he wouldn't have laid on his back the whole fight and would have believed in his hands more.

That being said he definately deserves credit and is up there with the best in the division.

I think matching him up against struve would be an interesting fight. He seems to be evolving in his stand up but I still wouldn't fancy him against JDS or Cain yet

JDS, maybe, maybe not. I think he probably beats Cain though. It comes down to styles. Cain is strongest on the ground and that is a stupid place to go with Werdum. The striking is probably fairly close. I give Werdum a slight edge against Cain.

Though I like both Nelson and Russow they aren't upper tier Hw's. Fabricio has fought the upper echelon before it's time to give him them again en route to an eventual title shot.
