Former two-time UFC Lightweight title challenger, Gray "The Bully" Maynard, was visibly disappointed with Clay Guida's performance in the main event of last night's UFC on FX 4. Maynard expressed his frustration with Clay Guida's gameplan, claiming that you simply can't fight without taking risks. Maynard is now 11-1-1-(1) in his MMA campaign.

Exactly Daviesman. It's a game of chess as much as it is a fight.

"They weren't trying to give me a chance" Yes gray, thats the whole point!

Take away the other guys chance and impose your own game. That isn't a champion mentality blaming the other guy.

Champions go out and make it happen no matter what the other guy is doing.

This was not a "chess match" by Guida, or a "smart gameplan." He fought decently well for the first two or three rounds and was able to land some strikes. For the 4th and most of the 5th round, he simply ran around and evaded the action. He landed a grand total of 4 significant strikes in the 4th round, and two of those landed because Maynard cut him off, stood right in front of him, dropped his hands, and begged him to punch him in the face. He spent most of the 5th round off evading the action too.

And please stop comparing Guida's performance to Condit's vs. Diaz. Condit landed more than 3 times as many strikes as Guida...and he won.

"Champions go out and make it happen no matter what the other guy is doing." Maynard got the W, so that's exactly what he did. He was just disappointed that the fans were booing because Guida chose to run around and not throw a single punch for 30 second stretches of the fight.

I think that the advice Maynard received from Randy Couture during Edgar v. Maynard II bears repeating here: "Quit trying to f***ing knock him out! Just beat the sh*t out of him!" Maynard was clearly stronger in the clinch and confident enough in his chin to stand there for Guida to punch him in the face, He should have pursued the clinch more, eating a couple of shots to get it if necessary, and tried to do real damage to Guida. Even if he didn't finish him, it could have slowed him down enough to land the knockout punch or grab a takedown.

Seriously though Gray, cut the cage off better. Rampage Jackson moves like Frankenstein and still managed to cut off the cage from freaking Lyoto Machida. No excuses.

I haven't seen anyone comparing Guida's performance to condit apart from you.

And actually, yes it is a smart game plan to stay away from Maynards power and wrestling. Moron

But Diaz also cut off the cage and forced Condit to fight his fight and was forced to counter, Grays fault for not cutting the ring off more. When gray could he actually would dominate Guida. But Guida made sure it didnt happen.

If it's such a smart game plan then why did he lose?

And if your game plan is to stay away from the guys power and wrestling by running away and countering with zero offense, then wouldn't it be much smarter to just avoid the fight by NOT STEPPING INTO THE OCTAGON IN THE FIRST PLACE?

He lumped up Grays face and bloodied his nose pretty good for offering "Zero offence".

Also just because he didn't execute the game plan well doesn't make it a bad game plan.

He hit Gray with a glancing uppercut a minute into the fight. It did open a small cut on the bridge of his nose, but it definitely did not rock him or do any real damage. The fact that it continued to bleed for the remainder of the fight doesn't change the fact that Guida did NOT continue to land shots.

Guida's game plan was ONLY to not get hit. It was defense first, and score points only if it's absolutely safe, and it certainly did not include any plans to finish the fight. Had Guida been mentally prepared to finish the fight, he certainly would have done so when Maynard gave him two free shots at the end of the 4th. But he wasn't, so he threw two arm punches that landed and scored him pretty much his only points of the round, but did not hurt Maynard at all. Fighting simply to not lose is always a bad game plan.

I thought he executed fairly well. So did one of the judges.

Good footwork is lost on everybody if it doesn't set up any offense.

It's like having a picture perfect swing in baseball...and striking out every time.

It's like having the most beautiful looking jump shot in basketball...and airballing every shot.

It's like a quarterback having the quickest release and throwing a beautiful spiral...and missing all his receivers.

It's completely worthless on its own.

Sure Grey, I bet you can't understand why anyone would try and make a fight difficult for you instead of fighting to your strengths.

Maynard....million dollar fists, 10 cent brain.

Mind you, Guida wasn't smart enough to take advantage of the holes in the Bully's game. He was doing okay early on and if had stuck with stick and move, instead of just moving, he would have won.

I agree that Maynard does cry a lot. If you want to stop somebody from moving, get a hold of him. However, there is a Huge difference between footwork and running. The difference is, footwork is used by people trying to win a fight, running is used to by peope trying not to lose a fight. Very very different. Clay showed every he has great footwork and absolutely no will to want to win. Damn shame, though not overly surprised. Gray Maynard is way too one dimensional and I can name about a dozen people who could all play the same game plan against him simply because he can't stop it.

There is such a thing as footwork and tactical retreat--and there is avoiding a fight and timidity.

Clay Guida not only lost the fight with his 'gameplan', but he lost fans and the goodwill of his boss Dana White. Guida will discover that he has plummeted in the standings at LW all because of his refusal to bring the fight.

And Guida deserves the loss of respect.

On the other hand, while I don't blame Maynard for Guida's lack of fighting spirit--I DO blame Maynard for being a crybaby and a whiner.

Suck it up Grey, and take it like a man for once.
