Daniel Cormier: Put me up against Jon Jones as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter

Earlier today, Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier came out with some interesting statements concerning MMA's most oft-discussed man, UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones. While Cormier has been a Heavyweight throughout his whole career and is set to face former champion Frank Mir in Strikeforce's final Heavyweight bout ever on November 3rd, he seems to have grand ideas for his foray into the UFC. Speaking to BloodyElbow.com, Cormier relayed the following about a possible move down to 205lbs.:

“Dana already said he thinks I'd do well at 205. If he offered me a fight down there against Jon Jones, and gave me some time to get the weight off safely, shoot, I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. It's like all the guys wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather or Roy Jones when he was the best. As a champion, and one of the best fighters in the world, guys should always step up to the plate and want to fight Jon Jones. So, if Dana said, 'Daniel, I'll give you some time to make the weight', I'd gladly take that fight if Cain is the champion at Heavyweight.”

So, Cormier is expressing his attitude as that of a company man, before even fighting in the UFC Octagon. Cormier is on a roll, having an undefeated record while using his Olympic wrestling to beat opponents into submission. He couples this with heavy hands, winning a one-sided decision over long-time Heavyweight contender Josh Barnett in the Grand Prix Final last May. Cormier even detailed a plan to face Jon Jones, one that would give him time to both get accustomed to the fans and cut the weight needed to fight at Light Heavyweight:

“Give Jon a challenge that he doesn't get from most guys, and that's something that I present. Hopefully, him and I get through our next fight. At the beginning of the year, let us coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. How does that sound? I'm throwing it out there right now. Let's do it. He hasn't coached the show before, and neither have I. Let the fans get to know me better by putting me on TV for two and a half months, and then put me and Jon in a fight. Jon's a good wrestler, but I've wrestled at a different level. I'm gonna pressure him. I'm gonna take him down. I think it would be great for everybody, all around. I can tell you with 100% confidence in myself and in my ability, that if I was to fight him, or anyone else in the world, at some point in that fight, if I decide to put them on their back, I'm putting them on their back.”

If this situation was to play out next year it could result in a huge bout and a huge challenge for Jon Jones. Will we see Daniel Cormier face Jon Jones next year?

I gotta see the guy get down there safely first. His kidneys shut down on him, and he got in to some health trouble while he was wrestling the last time he tried to make 212. I gotta see if he can get down there healthy.

However, if he does, I think I'd be most excited about this match up at 205 over anybody else in the world. This guy was looked at as having a great chance to medal in 2008 before his body shut down on him. His wrestling is unreal, and his striking has become really good. I'd love love love this fight.

I don't think he was talking about cutting wt but losing it. If he loses it the right way by cutting down his call and gearing his workouts more toward wt loss, he can lose it more than safely.

    I understand.

However, I'm speaking on the last time he actually competed at a low weight class. Daniel Cormier competed at 212 for his entire career in wrestling. He did it well enough that he was one of the favorites to medal there in 2008 and won numerous great tourneys in his career. Right after the trials that year he did the same routine to get down, and his body shut down on him. While he was conducting his normal cut for the contest his kidneys stopped working and he wasn't able to compete.

I'm not saying it will be impossible for him to make it to 205. I'm just simply saying I'd like to actually see him there first because of what happened in Beijing.

Cool. Yeah I know about the Olympic incident. I think that if he goes to 205 it will be permanent and he will walk around at close to fighting wt. I hope that is what he meant because I really don't want to see him try a wt cut.

Thank you!!! Great point. Strike force guys always wanna come over and immediately to take on the top UFC guys and it never turns out well for them. Diaz lost, You know Reem would have lost if he hadnt lost to himself, Bigfoot lost badly, Miller get the funk out of here, J. Shields is barely a undercard contender the list goes on. So now DC is the answer. Shut up and earn the shot. I'm tired of this " Squeaky wheel gets the grease attitude". This isnt wrestling!!!

So this how its going down now they whisper sweet things into daddy Dana's ear to make him happy? DC needs to work his way up to a title shot just like everybody else.

Everyone else such as Vitor??? Give me a break hate, DC would destroy Diva Jones. You just don't want to see your man crush get handled and spanked like a small child.

The article portrays it as DC playing the company man part, but if you look at the situation (and what he actually says). He compares the era/Jones to that of RJJ and PBF, and says that all the guys who wanna compete at the highest level should jump at the chance to fight him. That's not really company man talk (as he makes very certain terms known; Cain being HW champ, time to make the weight).

I'd say he very well "deserves" the fight as much as anybody at this point. Undefeated at HW, and if he beats Mir will have taken out 3 top ten guys in a row. Machida and Rua also turned the fight down (because of the months notice), and have already been beaten anyway.

I'd also much rather see DC fight him than Gus, Teixera, or Hendo. Jones would be a slight favorite IMO, but it's about as close as anybody gets at LHW at this point.

I don't think DC should have to work his way up, especially if he beats Mir. I understand that they're two different weight classes, but the guy holds a belt. Its similar to when Dan came from pride with his belt, even though prides middleweight belt was technically a LHW belt, but its still champ vs champ. Jon should beat Vitor, but I've seen crazier upsets and depending on Dans recovery time who else is there? He already smashed everybody else, give the guy a shot.

Jones can't take DC down, he's too solid in his low center of gravity, too explosive and too great of a wrestler. He can't KO him, DC has a granite chin and Jones doesn't have that kind of KO power anyway. He can't out cardio him, DC is a beast that goes toe to toe against Cain everyday of the week. And he can't protect from a DC punch that is one of the hardest at HW and is guaranteed to be lights out. I don't see the slight favorite analysis. Where is it?

Jones just might be able to take him down. Wrestling isn't all about size and stature as some of the best wrestlers of all time are long for where they compete at (Cael Sanderson and Phil Davis for example). Jones is like this, and has been able to take really good wrestlers down. I'm not sure Jones could or couldn't but I wouldn't count him out.

Jones might not have power to KO somebody, but he's knocked down people before so he at least has a little bit of power. Cormier also hasn't really every been hit that hard before. Barnett and Monson caught him a bit, but they were both beat to hell by the time they landed.

Jones has also never been even been dropped (let alone rocked), and Cormier has 4 TKO/KO's (3 of which to are to the stalwarts Gary Frazier, John Devine, and Lucas Browne). So I don't exactly understand why Jones automatically couldn't protect against a DC punch, let alone if it lands that it immediately KO's him.

Daniel Cormieris a beast no doubt, but lets not forget who Jones is and who he's beaten. They guy has tore through the LHW division. I saw your chart on the other page excusing his wins. While it definitely was pretty funny, its still just excuses. Those were great fighters that Jones dominated. Cormier has some real skill, but he hasn't consistently beaten that level (yet).

There's also the very real part about Cormier coming down to 205. If Jones was moving up to HW to compete against Daniel it'd be one thing, but if Cormier is moving down (taking into account how his last attempt at cutting weight went) how his body reacts would be a mystery.

However, I'm not trying to make out that Jones is some huge favorite either. When I said slight favorite I meant somewhere around -125 to -150.

BTW I think you make great points on it too. Cormier is a freak no doubt, and I would personally have trouble picking a winner if I knew Dan would be 100% at LHW.

But when you defend your fantacy **** buddies, its just annoying. Im sure you dream nightly about some day being able to wipe the sweat off Jon Jones nut sack after a fight. First off, I'll be short. Because I have a busy weekend ahead, and if we're being honest your just blowing off steam because I disagreed with your opinions from past threads (Gray Maynard and Shane Carwin's power is overrated, Daniel Cormier is not top 10, etc.). Second, if you're gonna make a whole post about how I'm defending my "fantacy", at least do it on one where I've made him more than a slight favorite on a guy you implied was overrated 3 days ago.

Especially not directly after another thread where I cut him down.

Damn everyone jumping on the bandwagon for cormier almost as fast as they jumped on jones' wagon. I'm going to laugh when he loses his first fight and the same fans that gave the crown start ripping him apart. And why are humble classy fighters taking the Chael approach. I guess it works. But Daniel reallllllly needs to fight at least 2-3 times before a title shot. idk...HES FROM STRIKEFORCE......Oh and everyong root for the chargers on Monday Night football....

People keep saying DC needs to earn his way into a title shot, how the hell did Vitor Belfort earn his way into a light heavyweight title shot? The way things 'should be' and the way things are, will never be the same.

cormier could easily beat jones because hes a way better wrestle, hes stronger, hits a lot harder and has ko power and jones doesn't hit hard he doesn't have ko power and he most likely couldn't take cormier down so i don't see how jones could beat him because he such a great wrestler, is stronger and his wrestling base is great as well
