Dana: I Had It Scored 2-1 Carmouche, But The Judging Was A Little Suspect

Former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight challenger Miesha Tate was nearly sent to her third straight UFC loss after Liz Carmouche largely dominated her for the better part of two rounds in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., April 19, 2014) UFC on FOX 11 event from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

However, “Cupcake” showed true resiliency and heart to come back and nearly finish the fight in the third round, smothering “Girlrilla” with a long chain of brutal submission attempts (watch the video highlights here). The decisive final round undoubtedly earned Tate the unanimous decision victory, her first inside the UFC Octagon.

But there were some who thought that Carmouche already had the first two rounds in the bag, which would have required Tate to finish the fight in order to win. Among these people were Carmouche’s corner and UFC President Dana White, who spoke up to FOX Sports after the event to detail his feelings that Carmouche should have taken home the win:

“ I actually had that fight scored 2-1, Liz Carmouche. I gave Carmouche one and two, and gave Miesha the third, definitely.”

When asked if he thought if Tate’s submission attempts were enough to pick up the win, White quickly replied:

“No. I mean, you could make the argument that Liz really didn’t do any damage; she just took her down and laid on her, she really did no damage. Yeah, so, you know, it’s not like, her winning is like, ‘Oh my God, this is a tragedy,’ because Liz didn’t do anything. I always tell these guys, and the judging tonight was a little suspect to begin with, um, if you go out and leave it in the judges’ hands, don’t be bummed if you don’t win the fight.”

It’s no doubt questionable that Tate won by way of unanimous decision, because you might have thought at least one judge would have given the first two rounds to Carmouche. But like White says, “Girlrilla” did precious little damage with the advantageous positions she was presented with.

Regardless, Tate is back in the win column and should be headed for another big fight. Just whom should “Cupcake” face next?
