Dana White: I hardly convinced Anderson Silva to rematch Chael Sonnen

Speaking exclusively to MMAjunkie.com, UFC President Dana White revealed about Anderson Silva's initial refusal to step inside the Octagon for the second time with Chael Sonnen. In fact, White admitted he had "to fight" the reigning UFC Middleweight champion in his room, just minutes before UFC 148 press conference in Brazil. Silva also didn't want to get on a media call with Chael Sonnen, which probably contributed to his famous "I'll break his teeth" threat:

"When we did the press conference down in Brazil, Silva hadn't even agreed to fight him. That fight wasn't happening. I had them bring Anderson to the place where the press conference was, and we sat in a room for three hours fighting about the fight.

(Silva wants to fight) anybody but Chael. He thinks Chael is disrespectful and doesn't deserve a shot at this title at all. So leading up to the press conference, it was delayed an hour because I was fighting with him in my room."

The Gangster from West Linn, Oregon, and The Spider will finally meet this Saturday, in what can be easily labeled as the most heated rivalry in MMA history. UFC 117 sold 600,000 PPVs, but according to White, UFC 148 could well go above one million buys.

Today's UFC 148 pre-fight press conference at Lagasse;s Stadium in The Palazzo Las Vegas is expected to provide more drama in the engoing saga between Sonnen and Silva.

Hahahah, that was one interview. Also lets go over the list of why that doesn't apply: Strikeforce was and still is a second tier promotion so Nick Diaz's "championship" was nothing more than a paper belt. Plus a cheap shot isn't "cheating" punch. Its just a **** move. Nick changed his tune immensely when Dana talked about bringing him over to fight GSP when the lead up to fighting him started. He was also more than happy laying low against Jay Hieron, and instead taking on Marius Zaromskis two years before that. Definitely doesn't fit the fantasy mold of a "true champion".

Well I stretched a bit but a cheap shot is cheating.lol. Regardless though its a matter of opinion and to not let a guy fight is more hurtful to his career in which you don't believe he deserves to participate in.

A cheap shot during the fight would be cheating. After the fight is over there is nothing cheating about it as the competition is over (which IMO makes even more of a shitty thing to do, but it does not fall in line with cheating).

I think your thought about true champions is honorable thing, which is how we as fans want to see our titlists as. The problem is it is rarely (if ever) done in practice outside of looking for higher pay, or looking to avoid bad match ups.

In the event yes it is not cheating to do so afterwards but in the feud between them in which the resolution was to be decided in the match the sucker punch became a part of cheating. But obviously I was reaching to find a circumstance.. I agree, most often it is matchup related but maybe Silva did not want to see a guy like him become champ one day. To him it might be like a guy who brings bats to every fight get the title.

Glad they're fighting again but a part of me felt the same way Anderson did, that Chael didn't deserve a rematch. It's giving him exactly what the asshole wants.

Chael cheated the 1st time & still came up short against a injured Silva. Not to mention, had he been smart enough & learned from all the passed loses via triangle, he'd have let off the gas & won the fight & title easily.

Or if he'd attempt to even pass guard. Hanging out in the guard of a BJJ black belt is usually a bad idea. Word has it that he's going to be actively trying for the sub himself this time though, so he should be trying for a guard pass this time if/when it hits the mat. Chael might get subbed again, but I doubt it'll be by triangle.

i guarantee silva will make this a different fight from the last when he wins again his fans will still be making exvuses for a 3rd fight. anderson is the true champ and chael will never acoomplish what anderson has.

the thing is.. if chael wins and silva retires he will still be known as one of the best ever in mma.

if chael finds a way to win he will never be on the same level as anderson because there are a lot of bad fights for him stylistically in the division

From what we saw when he fought Bisping, I don't think there's a way for Chael to win a 5 round rematch. If Chael gets the title, Bisping will beat his ass.

Hell, I thought he did beat him the first time. But I don't think Chael is good enough to finish Bisping, and after three rounds of matching each others pace, it was Sonnen who was getting taken down and pounded on. Bisping still had plenty of gas in the tank. Both guys are tough, but I think it's a matter of cardio. Sonnen's got a lot, but most of the time he can rest on top on the ground, dictating the pace. Bisping is the first one that was able to make him work for it.

Sonnen looked gassed by the end of the third round. I don't think he'd have been able to take Mike down in the following two rounds, and considering Sonnen said Bisping was hurting him pretty bad in the stand up, I think he'd get TkOed in a 5-round fight.

First off, that's fine you thought he beat him the first time. At least half of the MMA world disagrees with you though, and so do the actual scorecards from the judges involved and the MMA media who scored it online.

Secondly, getting taken down and pounded on? No. He was taken down at the very end of the third round, and blocked almost everysingle strike from there on out. That' why Chael won the third round everywhere.

Lastly, I'll give you he was gassed by the end of the third. He definitely was, and it could point to Bispings pace but also the fact that Chael straight up underestimated him. If you look at the way Chael fights he is always spent at the end of a fight (with the exceptions of the Filho fiasco and quick subs). Even against Dan Miller, a person he did everything he wanted against, he was breathing fast and heavy after the fight was over. Even Marquardt, Chael could barely stand after that fight was over. He trains specifically for whatever fight he's going into. The though that he'd be gassed against Bisping so easily again after three while definitely valid, probably isn't likely. However, the cardio could definitely be Bisping's trump card (as long as he doesn't come into the fight in the type of shape he fought Mayhem in).

You can't blame him for being scared. More punches than all his other fights combined. More time on his back than all of his fights combined. Chael is the hardest to hit MW. Can't blame Anderson for being scared.

@Silvaisking - shhh, don't tell anyone this but no, I don't really think Silva was scared. I wasn't kidding when I say above "One of the best of all time". I think he is the greatest living fighter. On par with Fedor at least. I just have to save "one of the best" because I can't accept that Bruce Lee wasn't the best :-). It's a thing with me. Sorry.

IF IF IF Sonnen wins Silva is still the best. Everybody loses at some point. If Sonnen wins (which I'm hoping for) that doesn't diminish Silva's tremendous skills. It was just time.

Ya he sure made himself into the "Bad guy" most people who decide to market themselves this way usually end up being a flash in the pain.

All the best to Chael in the future anyway because we all have to find a way to feed our families and this persona sure has brought him a lot of PR and he's a funny guy but in the end this is fighting not comedy.

Notice he didn't turn down the WWE offer as saying that would be ridiculous.

He knows his strengths deep down and he is a great fighter but there is a very gifted fighter in his way...

Mike, I think many of us Sonnen fans are more complex than you give us credit for. I'm a fan of both. I'm hoping for Sonnen in this fight. If Silva wins I'll say the same thing I said after his display against Forrest: "F.... Anderson is incredible." Then I'll say "crap, now I have to go face Hateocracy, Silvaisking, Mikejrentero etc." Oh well, there are worse things then having to admit Anderson Silva is the greatest.

That's cool man my issue with the whole thing is that because Sonnen is such a great promoter - which many say is good for the sport (debatable) it has spun people to be a little hateful. I wonder towards what?

Anderson? Most likely the greatest Champ that we have and may see.

Why? Because of one or two lack luster performances among how many amazing fights?

Chael said in this conference that this fight would be another to add to his highlight reel.

That's a funny thing to say considering you are sitting next to a guy who is a human highlight reel. His last win over Chael in itself made history.

I guess I'm just like the rest of these people who feel that you don't have to get personal but more importantly have some respect for a living legend. It's the truth he a legend and anyone who has an IQ above 98 can attest to that.

I think deep down we all know that Chael doesn't have much of a shot but we love an underdog - Chael talks with confidence so that helps.

Say he does win than what? How long before people start calling his style boring? most his fights go to decision - isn't that the beef with GSP? In this Sport people are fickle.

If Anderson refused to fight Chael Dana would have dumped so much shit on Anderson in the press.

Look what happened to Shogun recently. Dana would make a great dictator. Imagine that dude running the US instead of Obama. He would probably do a better job as a businessman, but holy shit the US would be at war with every frickin country under Dana.

You know, if Silva had whipped Chael's butt, then the whole "he's so disrespectful, he doesn't deserve a rematch" thing would make sense.

But he didn't, and it doesn't. If someone hits you more in one fight, than you ever have been hit in your whole career, and then you say you don't want to fight them, you do sound afraid.

Do I think Silva is actually afraid of Sonnen? No, that's silly. I'm a GSP fan and when people said he was afraid of Diaz, I laughed my ass off.

But I think Silva is afraid of losing. He's at the end of his career, and I think more than anything, he wants to be remembered as the greatest MMA fighter of all time.

And he's earned it. He's undefeated in the UFC. Realistically, he only has a few fights left in him and the biggest hurdle to that unblemished record is one Chael P. Sonnen.

I am so looking forward to this fight.

Silva is not afraid of losing. Silva's has the best career of any UFC fighter of all time, He could lose 5 straight fights and still be the best fighter in UFC history. Losing a fight has no bearing on Silva's greatness. Look at all the people who worship fedor after all his losses. Get a clue you meathead. Silva has the longest winning streak, longest undefeated streak and the most title defenses ever in UFC. A potential loss to anyone will never affect what he has accomplished.

Of course Silva's reason for not wanting to fight sonnen again makes sense. the guy cheated for a title fight. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE KEEP FORGETTING THIS FACT. That idiot sonnen should be banned from any professional sport.
