Dana White hits back at Machida title shot critics
Posted on August 7, 2012, 04:32 PM by Anton Gurevich"Everything about Lyoto Machida tells me he wants that title shot worse than 'Shogun' does. He'll fight anybody. You can tell he wants that title shot worse than 'Shogun,' in my opinion, and he looked good tonight. He knocked Bader out convincingly. He didn't take any damage, and he had a good showing against Jones in his last fight.
Don't watch it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's what everyone said about this card. All these geniuses who have all the answers are judging cards before they happen. you don't judge something until after it happens. to judge it before is completely stupid." - MMAMania.com
UFC President Dana White hit back at those critiquing the title shot given to Lyoto Machida following his victory over Ryan Bader at last weekend's UFC on FOX 4. Reigning UFC Light Heavyweight champ, Jon Jones, will face Dan Henderson in just three weeks at UFC 151, with sights on extending his streak of consecutive title defenses. While Dan Henderson is no pushover, there's a good chance of Jones vs. Machida II. In fact, Jones finished all four fighters competing in UFC on FOX mini Light Heavyweight tournament, which only suggests that giving the title shot to Alexander Gustafsson could've been a better idea.

Dana is the Howard Stern of MMa. U sometimes dont like it, and sometimes you do, but the one thing for sure you still watch or read his bullsheet.
I'd rather see Lyoto take another crack at it than the other 3. When i heard one of them was getting a title shot I thought of Machida being the lesser of 4 evils lol
Well Said Dana !
While other brazilians like Thiago Alves or Shogun only deserve the "Shitle Tot", Lyoto truly deserves the Title Shot !
hahahahahaha
Dana White has a nice double chin.
"Don't watch it. If you don't like it, don't buy it."
Ok.
It would be so cool if Jones came out after smashing Dan (if that happens), and told Rogan after he tries to hype Machida as an opponent that he won't be fighting him. Then saying he'll be taking a fight at HW later in the year to stay fresh while Machida and Rua fight to see who deserves the shot more. It would be even better with Dana and Machida in the cage.
Jon jones making Diva claims like that? Evan you are crazy, that would not be cool. I would probably throw my computer through my tv screen hoping magically it would smash Jon Jones in the face at that point.
Why is it a Diva claim? Machida is the "rightful" #1 contender because Dana changed his mind a couple weeks ago about the Vera-Rua winner. It's not him ducking anybody. It would be him flipping the bird to a process that has him fighting a guy he destroyed less than 8 months ago.
As a UFC fan I definitely think Machida deserves the shot more, both for what he and Shogun did in their fights against Jones and how they fought this past weekend. Machida looked great, Shogun looked okay.
Did I miss something? Who is complaining about Lyoto getting shot?
Plenty of people, considering Jon left Lyoto looking like this 8 months ago:

Yeah, and who says Couture should give Liddell another shot - he beat him handily the first fight...and Joe Frazier needn't fight Ali again, he beat him the first time....and Mir doesn't need to fight Lesnar again - he schooled him the first time....and Roberto Duran shouldn't have to fight Sugar Ray Leonard again, he already beat him...etc
Considering everything it seems likely that Jones will beat Machida but who knows, Derek Drouin won a bronze medal for Canada today. This was his FIRST international competition.
We watch fights like Jones v Machida as much to see what we don't expect as what we do expect.
None of what you are saying is makes sense doc.
Duran vs. Leonard was an extremely close fight, and Duran's biggest pay day possible after the fight was a Leonard rematch (not much connection other than they are both combat sports). Mir was battered half to death by Lesnar until Lesnar made a rookie mistake and fell in to a submission. Lesnar went on to win two fights after that too, not one (again very little connection other than they both took place in the UFC). Muhammad Ali fought 13 times inbetween fights with Frazier, and was also looked at as the best boxer/most famous sports star in the world before he lost to Frazier (again much different than a random challenger trying to fight for a title again after losing to the champ in terrible fashion 8 months prior).
Andre Ward won the gold in 2004 in his first International appearance at LHW (at a time when their was dominant fighters there and few gave him little chance). People didn't pay $54.99 to watch it. Nor did they pay to watch Drouin win this year (or the U.S. give their worst performance in Olympics history). A PPV headliner is a bit different than an international amatuer event.
Machida vs. Jones 1 wasn't some close fight where Jones caught him out of nowhere. It was close for one round then Jones turned up the pressure, thrashed Lyoto on the feet and mat, and finally choked him unconscious. Not many people will pay to see if the outcome is different from that less than a year later, and I don't blame them. It shouldn't be happening. Take the formula of what Anderson did with a few off fights at a higher weight class while a decent contender proves himself (Machida is 2-3 in his last 5).
Everybody keeps talking about "Machidas 2nd shot at Jones" but Jones still has to beat Hendo. Hendo can put Jones to sleep, Rashad landed a good amount of right hands when he fought Jones. Hendo only needs to land one.
*rolls eyes* maybe we should apply the same formula to GSP moving to another weight class instead of taking irrelevant rematches, because alot more would have happened if it weren't for people constantly moving to that weight class.
Machida legitimately lost to jones(which is why there's a rematch, making listing of that loss questionable) and shogun. Not sure how he hasn't proven himself, his last fight that wasn't against an ex-champion was almost 4 years ago, and he's only lost 2 legitimately.
Meanwhile people pretended to be excited for penn and koscheck rematches with GSP....and nobody who says AS or jones should move up seem eager to see GSP move either up or down while someone learns to either avoid hugging or strike properly so that they can challenge him.
*rolls eyes* *yawns* *doesn't bother to reply* *wants a deli sandwich*
@ Evan. Careful, that's dangerous. I sprained an eye muscle doing that and lets not forget what happened to Mama Cass Elliott ;-)
I always love debating with you but I'm always hungry afterwards.
:)
All the leaves are not brown here Doc.
Funny story; I broke out my copy of Pride and Prejudice the other day and guess what, it actually isn't all that long of a book. Now I am reading Anna Karenina. It is a long book.
Great point from Michael Stephensen. Evan despite his long retort, just got totally rinsed
I guess the fact that I completely shut down every single point he made means I got rinsed. Thank you.
*scratches crotch*
I am a huge fan of Rua but I thought that Machida earned the tittle shot, even tho neither one of them showed anything new, Machida was able to KO Bader without taking any damage, and Rua looked like he did against Coleman. With that said it is a shame that Dana White has to insult the fans who complain about his decisions, especially when he changes his mind every now and the I mean he said the winner of Rua/Vera fight was going to get the shot only to taoe his word back because the fans complained, so I guess the Rua fans thougt if they complain enough he would change his mind again but he did not and goes and called them stupid even tho they pay his bills...
I like this rematch. Don't hate B!!
The problem with that Machida/Rua/Bader/Vera choice is that Jones really destroyed them, We would have liked to see someone else trying, even someone less known like Gustafson or Texeira. But it's all about selling tickets and this is fine but in the end none of them deserved a shot or have a shot.
This is a testament to Jones, makes you realize that he is something else and have to move to HW to get that belt too. Imagine a fight with Junior or Cain ?
Agreed but weak for saying simples
if somehow Hendo wins, a rematch with Shogun would be better. Of course if Jones beats Hendo than a Jones vs Machida fight would be better
