Cyborg’s Nutritionist: Commision Allowed Her To Fight Overweight

Cris Cyborg

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino’s second Octagon appearance has come and gone this past Saturday (September 24, 2016), once again ending with her opponent succumbing to her superior power and striking ability in the early rounds of the contest.

The big news leading up to fight night last week, however, was if the Brazilian powerhouse would be able to make weight during her strenuous cut to 140-pounds for the catchweight contest.

A one pound allowance was to be granted to ‘Cyborg’ for the 140-pound contest, and come weigh-in morning it seemed as though all was well when Justino took the scale, before a picture of her weight hit the internet that is:

Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 5.11.05 PMIt appears as though Justino should have handed over a bit of her fight purse over to opponent Lina Lansberg, but ‘Cyborg’s’ nutritionist George Lockhart told The MMA Hour today, courtesy of MMA Mania, (September 26, 2016) that the Brazilian Athletic Commission allowed her to come in overweight:

“From my understanding with the commission, that was allowed. God’s honest truth, man, I’m going to get you down like any UFC fighter I work with knows, they are going to be 146 on the dot, 156 on the dot and I am not going to make you cut anymore weight that is absolutely necessary.

That’s exactly what we needed so that’s exactly what we got her down to. That was up to the commission, I believe. I think you get a variable in there and a lot of people don’t know this, when you step on the scales a digital scale, especially in the US, it only goes by .5. So if you are 171.2, it rounds down to 171. If you are 171.3 then it rounds up. A lot of people don’t know that.”

Lockhart also stated that his client walked into the cage at 170-pounds on fight night, meaning that in only 24-hours Justino was able to put on 30-pounds before stepping inside the cage with Lansberg.

‘Cyborg’s’ UFC future is still unknown, however, it is believed she will continue to fight at 140-pounds for ‘super-fights’. If that is the case it would definitely be beneficial to both Justino and the fans if she received a hefty step up in competition.
