Cub Swanson: I’d Love To Fight Conor McGregor But The UFC Won’t Let Me

UFC featherweight Cub Swanson is currently on the sidelines recovering from bone spurs in his elbow, but he’s still on quite the roll. Swanson has won five straight bouts over top contention, defeating George Roop, Ross Pearson, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, and Dennis Siver in rapid succession.

Swanson attributes much of that success to confidence instilled in him by his teammate, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and their head coach Greg Jackson. The surging 145-pounder is ready to get back in the Octagon and face the best fighters in a stacked division.

He appeared on last night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” to discuss his next move with Chael Sonnen:

“I really have no clue. I just want to fight the top guys. I really want a title shot but I don’t wanna wait for it. Like I said before, I don’t want to be a Lamas, I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and wait my turn, I just want to fight. I just turned 30, I’m in my prime, I’m having fun out here so just give me somebody fun to fight.”

Swanson has the attitude of a true fighter in that he just wants to fight the best and have fun. It’s refreshing to see a top contender like him say they won’t wait for their title shot because he’s earned it with his recent streak.

The Southern California native also touched on one of the hot topics surrounding the 145-pound division these days, the injured but still very talkative Irishman Conor McGregor:

“I would love to fight him and I even asked the UFC because he just keeps yappin’. But unfortunately, he’s too far from down the list and when I did ask for him, they told me that’s very unlikely. But the reason I wanna fight him is because I get paid the same whether I fight Aldo or I fight this guy. So if you wanna pay me the same amount of money to fight somebody I know I can beat up, I’m cool with that.”

Swanson seems confident that he would easily defeat McGregor, but that fight is many miles away from happening if it ever does. Swanson is instead focused on returning next March, telling his fans that he is ready to entertain them once again:

“Don’t think because I’ve been sitting out that I haven’t been training. I will be ready, I’m very hungry, and I just want to give you fans another show.”
