The injury bug, although not as prevalent as last year, has ripped another fighter out of another high-profile bout. UFC Middleweight Costa Philippou was pulled from his UFC on FX 8 co-main event bout with Jacare Souza due to a cut suffered in training.

Philippou was on a roll with six consecutive wins, and was set to face some of his toughest competition ever in welcoming the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion and BJJ wizard to the Octagon. Now, a suitable replacement is being looked for on very short time for the May 18th card from Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Some very unfortunate news for Brazilian MMA fans, who were no doubt looking forward to seeing this fight. The event is headlined by the pivotal middleweight bout between longtime UFC stalwart Vitor Belfort and the debuting Luke Rockhold, who took the Strikeforce belt from Souza.

This is the second cut suffered in training that has recently pulled a high-level fighter from a big bout, as Alexander Gustafsson notoriously suffered the same unfortunate fate prior to UFC Sweden. Questions have to be asked and answered about just how intense training practices should be so close to a bout. In any case, a search for a suitable replacement now rages on. Is there anyone willing to fight Jacare on such a short notice?

*Update* It appears that Chris Camozzi will step up to the plate and face Jacare, as UFC Brasil recently confirmed over Twitter:

Translation: Changes in -Costa Philippou is out through injury. Alligator now faces and Frog takes the beginner João Zeferino.

So Chris Camozzi, who was never even originally scheduled on the card, will now face Jacare De Souza. Camozzi was originally drafted in to replace CB Dolloway against Cezar Ferreira, until Ferreira was injured and replaced by Rafael Natal and then Camozzi got the call to face De Souza. As you can see from the above Tweet Natal will now face Joao Zeferino.

That is crap news, was really looking forward to this fight.
It was going to show us how good Costa really was, since his last fight was a bit weird with Boetsch getting cut and injured during it.
I was also super excited to finally see Jacare (who I think can be champ when Silva leaves) get his UFC debut against a great opponent.

In my opinion there is only two sensible replacements, Michael Bisping and Yushin Okami.
There may be two problems with those guys; is Bisping willing to leave his family again and go straight back to camp? and can Yushin cut the weight properly in that time?

Even if they don't get those two guys, just get anyone, still time for someone to step up and give Jacare his deserved debut

    Scratch that.

Chris Camozzi has been moved up the card from his original fight to fight Jacare.

ok? 4 fight win streak against people no where near the level of Jacare... I wouldn't be surprised if this was a mix of available top prospects and the 1's available not wanting to fight Jacare on that short of notice. I agree with Keith I'm a strong believer Jacare is championship material once Anderson leaves.

I'm a strong believer in Jacare too, and have been touting him as a guy who could even give Anderson trouble for years.

Who else were they supposed to get for a fight in 2 weeks? Bisping can't fight again this soon. Belcher is probably out indefinitely. Boestch and Munoz are scheduled to fight each other at 162. Tim Kennedy and Roger Gracie are fighting each other at 162 also. Palhares is still suspended.

The only guys that could have fought that would be better are Okami and Lombard. Makes much more sense to just move Camozzi. He's on the decent streak, and not getting any younger. He's a decent enough opponent for Jacare on 14 days notice.
