Clay Guida wants Frankie Edgar to be his first fight at Featherweight
Posted on October 10, 2012, 02:32 AM by Andreas HaleWith his recent announcement that he would be dropping down to the featherweight division, Clay Guida also has his sights set on who he think should be his first opponent: former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
"That would be a great match up," Guida said in an interview with Yahoo! Sports. "I've got a great deal of respect for Frankie and this fight has been a long time coming…[We are] both down here at 145 now and I'm going to make my mark in the division right out of the gate."
For the past couple of years, The Carpenter had been chasing Edgar and his lightweight title. The closest he came to getting a crack at The Answer was when he upended former WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at The Ultimate Fighter 13 last June. However, with Edgar embroiled in what can only be considered as rematch hell against BJ Penn, Gray Maynard and Benson Henderson, Guida was on the outside looking in. Back to back losses to both Maynard and Henderson had the Team Jackson fighter seriously reconsidering whether he should remain in the division. But Guida ultimately opted to follow Edgar out of the division. It also didn't hurt that Guida admits that he never needed to cut weight to make the 155 lbs limit.
"At '55 I didn't cut a pound so we were pretty fortunate," he said. "I definitely have a little extra fat around the waist. Fans and media see us on the scale but they don't see us the weeks leading up to the fight. I still had a few extra pounds I could shed at 155 so I'm sure 146 won't be too far off, especially with the right nutritionist and dietician."
With Guida being a top name and Edgar needing an opponent with champion Jose Aldo on the shelf, it could lead to a long awaited showdown with Edgar. But we'll have to wait and see what the UFC has in store for the two former lightweights.

Sounds good enough on paper...but when I remember Clay's last *fight* against Maynard, along with his dry-humping of Anthony Pettis, I can barely remember the last time I have wanted to see this guy in the octagon. Every time I think this guy is going to be in a barn burner he finds some way to make it suck. I'm talking about his recent performances here, of course we all loved the Guida/Sanchez fight but this isn't the same Clay.
True true but I doubt Maynard will be as worried with Frankie's power as he was with Gray
You all knew what I meant... I apologise whole heartedly for a typo...
Frankie shouldn't get a title shot after back to back losses so the best thing is for him to go through Clay to earn a shot at Aldo. If Guida wins he gets the shot at Jose, comprende? ;)
Since when is guida good enough that beating him earns you a title shot?
Edgar is already deserving of a fight with Aldo but guida doesnt deserve a shot against even frankie.
nerve of the guy. how does he think he deserves a crack at frankie?
frankie would win easily but would be a step back in competition and a waste of time on his part.
I agree with a step back but apart from Jose Aldo, who honestly isn't a step back for Edgar at 45?
well any of the established contenders would not be a step back.
You're pretty gay.
@Ripstic5921 : Is that what you're hoping for ?
Would be a cool fight to watch but almost feel like it's a bit pointless right now, both guys drop from LW to try and get gold at 45 and how do they start it off? By fighting a guy who was just in their weight class?
I'd prefer for them to fight someone who is a regular FW and maybe meet up down the road.
Edgar vs. KZ?
Guida vs. Poirer?
Aldo vs Edgar right away please !!!!!!!!!!!!
Dana said Frankie would get an immediate title shot if he came down to 145. He said nothing of the sorts about Guida. Clay needs to earn that fight with Frankie. He also needs to earn some fans back with an exciting fight or even two.
give him lentz.
Guida is asking to get knocked out.
That's cool. I want Jennifer Swift but that's not going to happen either....
