Chael Sonnen vs. Shogun Official For UFC on Fox Sports 1: Boston Main Event
After a whirlwind of ifs and maybes, it appears that the Chael Sonnen-Shogun saga has come to a close, at least in terms of the drama to set the event up. All that’s left now is for Sonnen to talk some trash, and for the fight to actually take place. The bout will go down, as rumored, in the main event of UFC on Fox Sports 1:Boston, adding a blockbuster final piece to a card that is quickly becoming one of the more stacked events in UFC history.
Dana White promised a huge event for Boston fans in the wake of the tragic bombings at the Boston Marathon, and he is stepping up to the plate to deliver. Chael Sonnen announced the news on “UFC Tonight” this evening, and said that he was looking for to fight an easier opponent:
“Look, I went after Wanderlei because he’s the worst guy I could find. I couldn’t get Wanderlei. So I’m going, why I don’t just do this: Why don’t I fight the guy that destroyed Wanderlei for years in the practice room, and that brings us to Shogun. Shogun, this is just good solid competition, but Wanderlei did this to you Shogun.”
Some more golden words from the always quick-witted Chael Sonnen. But Sonnen’s talk may be starting to outweigh his fighting skills, and he’ll need to win and win impressively at UFC on FS 1:1 to avoid the dreaded three-fight losing streak. In any case, the light heavyweight tilt will serve as a great headliner for an already fantastic looking card.
Earlier today, Urijah Faber was slated for an exciting matchup against Yuri Alcantara, and bantamweight prospect Michael McDonald signed on to fight the always-dangerous Brad “One Punch” Pickett. That means UFC on Fox Sports 1 from Boston will have some serious implications on the UFC 135 lb. division. Here’s a rundown of the huge August 17th event from Boston:
