Anthony Pettis: Jose Aldo Can Say What He Wants, Everyone Who Does Gets Finished

It looks like Jose Aldo has managed to get under the skin of Anthony Pettis.

The featherweight champion has accused “Showtime” of running from him numerous times now and it looks like the lightweight champion has had enough. In a recent interview with Sportv Pettis said he isn’t concerned about Aldo’s opinion and everyone who has said the same has been finished in the first round:

“I have never ran away in my life. Everybody that said that, I finished in the first round.” Pettis said. “Cerrone got knocked out in the first round. Ben Henderson, he got finished in the first round. Joe Lauzon, he got finished in the first round. Jose Aldo can talk and say what he wants, I will not let that affect me. When the fight happen, it will be the biggest fight of lightweight division in history.”

The champs were booked to face off at UFC 163 for Aldo’s featherweight title but Pettis had to step out with an injury, however, he came back a month later to beat Ben Henderson for the lightweight title at UFC 164. A fight between the two was then in the works again but “Showtime” suffered another injury.

Pettis went on to say a fight between the two should go down in the lightweight division when it comes around as it is more “realistic”. When it does happen he expects it to be the biggest fight in lightweight history.

“I just got my belt and I’m in a kind of more comfortable weight class. 145 pounds is tough for me to make. I could do it but it’s very difficult to make 145. So I think is more realistically he coming up to 155 than me coming down to 145. And I think that he cleared out the division. He beat everybody at 145. He’s fighting Chad Mendes again, he beat him with a KO in the first round.

It’s going to happen, it’s a matter of time. I have nothing against Jose Aldo, I don’t think that he’s a guy. He’s an amazing fighter. We both are in the prime of our careers, the fans want to see it, so let’s make it happen.”

With the two champions already set to fight other opponents this year, a match is unlikely to go down until at least mid 2015. That’s assuming Gilbert Melendez nor Chad Mendes will be able to dethrone the current belt holders.

Do you think Pettis and Aldo will ever square off?
