Anderson Silva Intends To Fulfill His Contract If He’s In The Mood

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva remains inactive since his crushing pair of losses to Chris Weidman in 2013; ‘The Spider’ was first knocked out by ‘The All-American’ at UFC 162, then failed in his attempt to regain the title at 168 when he suffered a broken leg whilst attempting a low kick.

Currently eying a late 2014/early 15 return, the future of Silva’s career is uncertain. With eight fights remaining on his UFC contract, it seems unlikely that the former P4P king will attain this at age 39. ‘The Spider’ spoke to Sportv about his remaining fights:

“I have eight fights. I intend to do them all, but do not know if I’ll be in the mood for this. For now, I’m very excited, going through a phase of renewal. It’ll be nice when I return to fight and do what I love. While you have this desire to fight, I’ll fight.”

It seems that a return for Silva is imminent, but he confirms the common opinion that he just wants one or two more wins before calling it a day. Perhaps a legacy-rebuilding win over Chris Weidman is what ‘The Spider’ seeks. Weidman was the first man to beat Silva in more than eight years, 19 fights, and the first to ever beat him with strikes.

That pill must have been very hard for the former champ to swallow, and the horrific injury in their rematch was the icing on the cake of a pretty crappy year for Silva. To retire as champion is a dream that many fighters have, but very few reach that goal. The lure of another big payday, or just the adrenaline of fighting in a cage is often enough to bring back even the most head-strong legends. Will the most dominant middleweight ever be able to retire as king of the division, or is it just too late for Silva?
