Anderson Silva opens up as a 13-1 favorite over Stephan Bonnar

Number one pound-for-pound MMA fighter on the planet, Anderson "The Spider" Silva, will step-in to replace to fill the void created by Jose Aldo's withdrawal from the long-anticipated encounter with Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, and Rampage Jackson's injury that cancelled the fight with Glover Teixeira.

Stephan Bonnar is currently on a three-fight win streak inside the Octagon, with victories over Krzysztof Soszynski, Igor Pokrajac, and Kyle Kingsbury. Still, Silva opened up as a huge favorite over his UFC 153 opponent, with an incredible 13 1/2 (-1350) to 1 odds from the bookmakers, similar Jon Jones' 13-1 chances to defend his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.

Both of Silva's fights at 205 ended via TKO in favor of the Brazilian. The Spider made his first trip up to Light Heavyweight back in 2008, at UFC Fight Night 14, for the fight with James Irvin, and then one year later in 2009 to deliver a legendary performance against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.

UFC 153 takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Heavyweight clash between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Dave Herman is the co-main event.

Bonnar via scissor takedown into a heelhook!

Jokes aside this is almost like an exhibition match. I don't want to take anything away from Bonnar but Silva is a tough dude to beat and i doubt this fight will be much different from Griffin vs Silva.

This is no more than a swansong for bonner against a top level guy to say thanks for everything you've done for us. (tuf 1 finale).

It's also a fun fan fight and comes at a convenient time. Nothing more.

Yea I like the fight too.

There's no point putting him against someone like Gus or Shogun, who might fight for the title soon, and then Silva goes out and embarrasses them.. ruining any hype for their potential fights against Bones Jones.

Bonnar is veteran and probably fighting for his last time - doesn't damage the division by Silva winning but still gives us a fun fight.

2 TKO's due to cuts / Dr. Stoppage. Never been KO'd...But, I don't think Chris Leban had ever been KO'd before he met Mr. Silva either...

Not sure I would even bet $1 on Bonnar if the odds were 1000-1

It would be a waste of a dollar.

Still looking forward to this fight though, I always love seeing Anderson do his thing.

honestly.. i think this goes to the cards... bonnar can take a beating.. he's the only person to not get finished by JBJ other than rashad, and not because he ran and avoided a fight for 25mins like Rashad did either... but because he's not really finishable.. and his BJJ is HIGHLY UNDERRATED .. so, while i doubt he'll win, i wouldn't be astonished if anderson got a little ****y and somehow bonnar locked in a sub and won the fight... or just went ape-shyt and berserker barrages silva and somehow connects... but no way does this end like the forrest embarrassment.. either bonnar takes 15 (or 25 if its one of those non title fight 5 rounders) of beating, or a remarkable shocking outcome)

I've heard a few guys note he wasn't finished by Jon Jones... remember that Jon Jones was extremely green, if it was the 2012 JBJ I can almost guarantee a finish.

I think his BJJ is underrate but not by a lot, all he could do was hold position against Kyle Kingsbury (someone noted for his lack of submission grappling).

What a surprise!! I just want to keep reading comments about how Bonnar is no joke and he has a super chin and this and that trying to hype a fight it's not gonna last 10min.

how long have you been watching MMA? since last night?

Bonnar has only even been decisioned, or TKO doctor stoppage due to cut.... so unless anderson slices him open good n doctor stops it, it's going to decision. goddamn retards run rampant on here. no one tried to 'hype' the fight in the comments, in fact, most are implying this is just a 'fun' match, because no one thinks bonnar really has much of a chance... but they do think that he will last the entire fight.. what did you say before matt serra fought GSP? or before gonzaga fought crocop? or before couture fought sylvia? oh that's right, u were still suckling on your mommy's teet

FirstnLastEmperor: I understand that Bonnar has never been Knocked out before, but there is always a first time for everything. Besides the corner stoppage TKO on his record, Sonnen had never been Knocked out before up until he fought Anderson Silva the second time around.

UG- Sonnen was TKO'd by Terry Martin in a similar way before that fight. Not sure where all the "Sonnen has never been KO'd" stuff came from. He was also admittedly rocked against Bisping the fight before.

There's always a first for everything, but Bonnar has one of the strongest chins in MMA. I think we see a dominant decision, or tko from cuts.

Yea you're probably one of those guys that when silva was gonna fight forest were like "oh this gonna be a real challage" "oh did anybody watch the season one finale" "it's not gonna b easy for silva this time" and so on an on, and what happen? Complete destruction. Same thing here bud. And all those fights you mentioned I watched. Am always going for the underdog and I don't even like silva, so **** off!!

    Thanks ;)

Bonnar has never faced anyone with anything close to Anderson Silva's speed, timing and accuracy. Those three things are far more important to a knockout artist than power.

Silva does not need a cut to KO Bonnar, because he's Anderson Silva. He can KO him, and I mean KO, not TKO, with a wider variety of strikes than I care to list. I don't care how good your chin is, everybody goes to sleep when they get hit with the perfect shot, and nobody throws more perfect shots than Anderson Silva.

Chris Leben has a fantastic chin and had also never been stopped until Silva knocked him out in 49 seconds. This is Anderson Silva you're talking about. How long have you been watching MMA?

actually. I thought forrest was gonna get destroyed. but i did think he was gonna be a challage, gotta love those challages, they go good with an onion dip.

do you not see the difference between assuming he'll get merked in 10mins and thinking it'll go the distance? I have a REASON to believe it'll go the distance, you have 0 precedence to decide he's gonna get KO'd immediately. why am i even explaining this? you cannot spell challenge for christ sake.

It's a fight anything can happen - Bonner is a big dude and is on a 3 fight win streak - If Anderson were to get caught it could be big trouble - I know chances are low in that but still a chance is a chance.

Anderson seems interested in fighting at LHW lately - stepping for two cancellations I wonder why?

Might it be an interest in testing himself at another weight class. Or is this just for fun?

Anderson will most likely win this - but I still want to watch how- Bonner has had a strong chin would be interesting to see how it holds up.

A few people are saying they think Bonnar has a chance to get a sub on the ground but IMO Anderson actually has better BJJ and grappling than Bonnar.

Anything is possible in MMA, though not necessarily probable. If you bet on both Bonnar and Belfort in tandem, the odds would be about 169 to 1.

Would I bet $100 on that? No chance. But $10? Maybe. Stranger things have happened, though not much.

Still, given the choice, I'd rather see the Silva and Jones take these fights than not fight at all.

I think Bonnar should try a spinning backfist--Silva won't be expecting it.
