Alan Belcher: I want to fight Chris Weidman, not Anderson Silva

Octagon veteran Alan "The Talent" Belcher was originally scheduled to face Vitor Belfort on the main card of UFC 153 event in Brazil. Unfortunately for Belcher, Belfort accepted the fight with Jon Jones on the same card, leaving "The Talent" without an opponent. Belcher would later reveal that he's injured, claiming that Belfort's fight with Jon Jones is a blessing in disguise.

Today, Belcher spoke about who he would like to fight instead of "The Phenom", naming Chris Weidman as an opponent that "makes sense".

Surprisingly enough, Alan Belcher stated he's not concentrating on getting an immediate shot at Anderson Silva's UFC Middleweight title. According to Belcher, "The Spider" should fight Georges St. Pierre or Jon Jones:

"Chris Weidman, I think that fight makes sense," Belcher said. "Do I think he's the number one contender? I don't know about that but I think he's definitely up there.

[Fighting Anderson Silva] I don't see a title shot even happening. Anderson Silva's at a point where he needs to be fighting Jon Jones, he needs to be fighting GSP. If I'm Anderson Silva's manager, that's what I'm telling him to do." - ESPN.co.uk

Alan Belcher is currently 18-6 in his MMA career, 9-4 in the UFC.

Belcher knows he isn't going to get the 1rst shot at Silva, and many people think if GSP falls through Weidman will be considered 1 of the top 2 contenders, so calling him out seems like the right thing to do. I'm kinda confused how Silva says he wants off til next year then was going to "save" UFC 151 by fighting LHW...

He is likely close to LHW in weight atm since he's not in fighting shape, and it was only 8 days out from the fight... not much of an effort necessary but he definitely wouldnt have been at the top of his game.

But that says a lot to those who claim he's only taking time off to "preserve his legacy". He could have easily lost a fight on short notice at 205...

Yea super hard one to pick, both guys are as good as they come at MW, outside of The Spider.

I think big question is how Belcher deals with the wrestling of Weidman and if he can threat him if taken down with subs.

Alan has been working on dealing with wrestlers and theirs shots with a lot of kimuras but I don't know how effective they will be on a guy like Weidman who is an All-American wrestler and a ADCC grappler.

Very interesting match, probably go for Weidman by dec. but could easily be Belcher's fight

To be honest, I'm tired of the calling out. It used to mean something not it just means I'd like to add my name to the list of guys who want to fight _____ _____ (insert the name of a champ here).

What matters to me is that Belcher vs Weidman would be a great fight to watch.

Refreshing to hear someone being low key and honest about where they are at instead of over-hyping themselves.

Thats the same thing I took from it Cage. He seems pretty down to earth. Got some respect for BelchEr.....figured I'de keep typing his name like that until others get it.

I wonder if Weidman will take the fight... he seems so set on getting a match Anderson he might no accept a fight until he is straight up told he isn't getting it.
