Who won the Sanchez/Kampman fight?
Posted on March 4, 2011, 01:40 AM by Evan HoloberThe fight was a close one last night. Although I think there was a clear winner in the matchup I want to get everyone else's opinion.
- 1. Martin Kampman
- 2. Diego Sanchez
- 3. Draw

it was a close fight and you could make a solid arguement for either fighter but i think after watching it again that diego pulled it off not by much though
Martin Kampmann won rounds 1, and 2. He landed more shots did more damage, and should be credited on the score cards for preventing takedowns for the entire fight.
Yeah, Kampman was going back too much rounds one a two and just wasn't throwing many punches. He actually even looked kinda tired after the first round. Even Rogan and Goldberg both said he slowed down after he got cut...
Kampmann through almost 25% more strikes the Sanchez, for someone not throwing many punches he was still throwing more punches than Diego
Silva was going backwards when he knocked out Griffin. Kampmann went backwards all the while picking Sanchez apart. Quality performance and deserving winner. No way did Sanchez win with good judging.
aggression isnt as important as damage, landing more shots, and preventing take down attempts. sorry an educated mma fan or fighter knows that.
Drew it wasn't just aggression in that fight diego controlled where the fight took place he had kampman backed up against the cage which allowed diego to brawl with him. I'm sorry but any educated fighter or fan would know control scores points. And takedown preventions don't score points it just keeps the opposing fighter from picking up points
The way i say it kampmann was in control of that fight. Diego was just desperately trying to walk forward and gain some control but all he got were punches in the face.
my basis on giving diego round two is that he had kampan hurt twice in that round while kampman landed more strikes the strikes that diego landed hurt him more. but like i said close fight i can see it both ways just my opinion. regardless of the outcome i think it was a great fight and both fighters should be respected for that. it is one of those fights that was so fun to watch that both fighters raised their status
Are you serious did you not see kampmans knees buckle. Joe rogan even pointed it out. And as for sanchez ending up on his back he tripped big deal
i think if i said i can see the justification in diego winningit would more closely repersent my opinion although when i first watched it i thought that kampman had won
I love that you made a vote lowkick padres. SWEET! Kampmann won the fight!
i think kampmann clearly won the first round but diego won the last 2
Sanchez won it dumbass check the results. They use to post vidoes in 2.0 now its this?
Diego won that fight no matter what you people think I have seen worse decisions from the judges. Kampman won round 1 clearly the judges knew that. Round 2 was sanchez. I know kampman landed the better strikes but sanchez landed some good strikes of his own and also showed better aggression and octagon control than kampman did. He constantly had kampman on the defensive and kampman ran away when diego had him hurt. Diego kept walking through kampmans strikes and showed great heart and determination. And in the third round it was the same story but this time diego got a takedown which scored points. And as for the guy that said kampman should get points for stuffing diegos takedowns sorry but that's not how it works your suppose to stuff takedowns and if you don't you it gets the other guy points so stuffing takedowns does have its benefits. And as for the fans that say sanchez looked worse than kampman, this is mma not a street fight if it was a street fight than by all means kampman won the fight but sorry that wasn't the case
Bottom Line Diego won..... If you can't live with it...Then stop watching MMA.... Diego won fair.... They made the right call haters...Live with it....War Diego......Case close kids...
Maybe a link would have done. or highlight the part you want to reference
Sanchez got face raped, he probably cant even see out of his eyes now, awarding the fight to him is a joke.
This decision was ridiculous. Kampman won this fight hands down. How can you walk forward into punches for 3 rounds, gettingyour face all bust up and win the fight? A bad decision.
I just rewatched the fight--Kampmann vs Sanchez.
I agree with the decision by the judges.
The 1st round was definitely Kampman, the only question is: Was it a 10-8 round? While Kampman kocked Sanchez down and landed very good shots--I would not say Kampman dominated--he won the round convincingly.
The 2nd round was close, but Kampman got tagged with more quality strikes than Sanchez. I think Sanchez clearly hurt Kampmann and the round was on balance--easily Sanchez's.
The 3rd round was the toughest to score, but I give it to Sanchez again, based on aggression AND quality strikes.
When I looked at the CompuStrike stats, I wondered about which fight they were scoring. I saw a lot of strikes attempted, but which missed their mark--many shoulder strikes and blocked strikes. I am thinking that CompuStrike 'human strike counters" got it wrong.
I am not saying Kampmann didn't get many great strikes, but my unofficial count on the second fight did not match CompuStrikes 'significant' strike tally. I know CompuStrike has several people counting and evaluating strikes and they take an average--but I do not see the huge disparity in significant strikes that they do.
Complicating matters was the visible damage Sanchez took. While visible damage is a good indicator of how well an opposing fighter is doing, it is not the only criterion on which to judge a fight. Some people are bleeders--and tend to get cut easier than others--and sometimes an injury bleeds a lot, but the fighter is unaffected. I did not see Sanchez much affected by his injuries, despite all the blood.
I like both fighters, so I would not say I was 'looking' for a particular fighter to win--if I favored one over the other, it would be Kampmann--who I respect as a great fighter who has had some razor-thin decisions go against him.
OK--I watched the 2nd round for a third time, and I still believe Sanchez took the round.
Throughout much of the round, Sanchez tried to take Kampmann down, and Kampmann stuffed the takedowns. I give only a slight edge to Sanchez due to his being aggressive and trying to take Kampmann down. Kampmann tried no takedowns himself, but was always defensive.
As for the striking, very few blows struck in the head or crucial body targets by either fighter. Most strikes were blocked or glancing. There were no effective kicks or knees by either combatant.
Sanchez got in a good elbow leaving the clinch in the early part of the round, and had two slugfest toe-to-toe moments where he came out on top of the exchange--but it still looked sloppy. He caught Kampann cleanly on the chin in the first melee, and Kampmann recovered well, but back away to regain his composure.
At the end of the round, Kampann was bloody and marked from Sanchez's strikes.
No one is saying this fight wasn't close--but to say Kampmann was robbed is simply not true--if you look at the fight in its entirety again.
Kampmann is an exciting fighter and he pulled it off a win or at least deserved a draw to my opinion.
being aggressive and getting smashed to a pulp is better than fighting smart. Hugging is better than hitting your opponent. heck, i think hitting your opponent counts for nothing in the judging we get lately.
Kampman won the first round hands down yeah. But diego had the rest the rounds he was more agressive and rocked him twice and slamed his ass at the end he didnt beat his ass but he still won in the beggging of fight's they always say get points for octagon control, agressiveness, and striking all those diego did he was stalkin kampman the whole time and agressive and count how many times diego tried to brawl with and kampman backed up... SO **** ALL U DIEGO HATIN PEOPLE U GUYS JUST DONT KNOW.....
Sanchez got his ass beat down, simple as that. Hope theres a rematch
